Before beginning his Country Music career, he tried to break into R&B. Although he was unable to secure a recording contract as a soul singer himself, he did pen several songs recorded by James Carr, including the title songs to Carr's albums "You've Got My Mind Messed Up" and "A Man Needs a Woman."
Known to refer to himself as the "Chocolate Cowboy", McClinton sucessfully marketed his album called 'The Only One' on television long before the practice was commonplace. Featuring his first country chart single 'Don't Let The Green Grass Fool You', a top 40 song in 1972, he considered it to be his finest work.
He died on September 23, 1987 after a year-long battle with cancer.
It's My Life
O.B. McClinton Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
No silent prayer for Faith departed
and I ain't gonna be just a Face in the crowd
you're gonna hear my voice
When I shout it out loud
Coro
It's my life
I ain't gonna live forever
I just want to live while I'm alive (It's my life)
My heart is like an open highway
Like Frankie said
I did it my way
I just wanna live while I'm alive, It's my life.
This is for the ones who stood their ground
For Tommy and Gina who never backed down
Tomorrow's getting harder make no mistake
Luck ain't even lucky
Got to make your own breaks
Repetir Coro
Better stand tall when they're calling you out
don't bend, don't break, baby, don't back down
Repetir Coro
The lyrics of O.B. McClinton's song "It's My Life" convey a message of self-empowerment and living life to the fullest. The opening lines, "This ain't a song for the broken-hearted, no silent prayer for Faith departed" suggest that this song is not meant for those who have given up on their dreams or lost their faith in life. It encourages listeners to be heard and not fade into the background, "I ain't gonna be just a Face in the crowd, you're gonna hear my voice When I shout it out loud." The choice to seize the moment and live life to the fullest is repeated in the chorus, as it emphasizes the notion that one should take control of their existence, "It's my life, It's now or never, I ain't gonna live forever, I just want to live while I'm alive (It's my life)."
The second verse of the song is dedicated to the individuals who have stood their ground and refused to back down in the face of challenges. It mentions Tommy and Gina, which some speculate is a nod to the characters in Bon Jovi's song "Livin' on a Prayer." The lyrics suggest that life is not always easy and that it often requires hard work to achieve one's goals, "Tomorrow's getting harder, make no mistake, Luck ain't even lucky, gotta make your own breaks." Overall, the message of the song is to embrace life and take ownership of one's destiny.
