That's All
O.Peterson & Stephane Grapelli Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Packing up the car
Say goodbye to home
I can't stand to stay here
Nevermind alone

It's burning here it's burning there I'm barely breathing
I think I need somewhere to go
I'm learning this and frankly I don't think I need it
But at least now I know

Standing by the road
See a car here and there
Staring at my phone
Because it's so easy not to care

It's burning here it's burning there I'm barely breathing
I think I need somewhere to go

I'm learning this and frankly I don't think I need it
But at least now I know

Overall Meaning

The opening verse of "That's All" by O. Peterson and Stephane Grapelli, describes someone packing up their car and leaving their home. The singer implies that they cannot bear to stay in their current situation as being alone is too difficult for them to handle. The second verse depicts the feeling of overwhelming anxiety that the singer experiences. Although, they do not know exactly where they want to go, they are certain that they have to leave where they currently are. They realize that their current situation is suffocating them and that they need to escape to find the clarity and space that they require.

The recurring chorus goes on to explain how the singer feels. They are “barely breathing” as they can feel that they are being consumed by their current surroundings. Yet, they don’t know precisely what it is they are searching for or even if they will find what they’re looking for. But, taking the steps to find their way out is progress in itself. Ultimately, the singer is taking brave steps forward, knowing that leaving their indelible mark on their world is all that they need to do in order to survive.

I have this CD and I can not count the number of times that I have listened to this track. Oscar and Stephane have a very unique way of blending their jazz creativity as one. Kudos also go to Mickey Roker, Niels-Henning Orsted Pederson, and the great Joe Pass. Thank you for the posting. The other tracks also offer some outstanding performances.

When I started listening to and learning about jazz, in the the early 1980s, this album was one of the first recordings I bought. Instantly hooked. There's truly nothing like these two together.
