Eclipsical
ORBS Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

She sleeps with the planets,
I know because I've seen it.
I sleep next to science,
Wishing it were her.

We were once a product of
Conservative America
She slept around, then left this town,
went looking for her Sun.
She flirts with the moons,
And lets them think they have her.
My cheeks are rosy-red,
I try to make her laugh but,
When she was young, she saw a film
Then packed her bags and marked a date.
The time has come, 2001,
She's on her own space odyssey.

I'm no cosmonaut, so I...
Tie an anchor to a woman,
Watch her chew through bone to set herself free.

She's not equipped for black holes
And I just want her in my arms.
I'm not equipped for long-term.

She's been here,
I smell her,
She's like the wind before the rain.
Naked, she'd tell me
Only stars know what she's really thinking.
She's in the arms of Jupiter,
I'll give back his moons in trade for her.
All beat and scarred he swears
The stars have taken her from me.

And I
Tie an anchor to a woman,
Watch her chew through bone to set herself free.

She's not equipped for black holes,
And I just want her in my arms.
I'm not equipped for long-term,
And I just want

I found my old sketches
Of flying packs, brown paper wings, and fire.
She slipped out the back door and left me,
So I learned to fly.

Light years fly by in search of you
Skin dries up, eyes go too.

Space fucklers say I should leave it alone,
The Milky Way traveler, well, he's seen it all.
Left Earth long ago to find a love of his own,
The lonely star juggler could never go home.

I'm no cosmonaut.

And I don't know anymore
There's little mean bugs in my veins
Can I stick to you, my love?
'Cause I'll stick to anyone

I'm in love with everyone
Bugs humming space hymns in my ear
I wake up stuck to someone
I wake up in other years.

Does anyone believe in time,
And do you feel the years slip by?
'Cause I do
Does anyone believe in age,
And do you see my skin drip off?
'Cause I do
Does anyone believe in love,
'Cause I've been face-to-face with her,
And I don't
Does anyone believe in God?
And do you feel the flames of Hell?
'Cause I do

Or maybe I just don't at all
It's really fucking hot in here.

So I sit
In the streams of time and wait.
And I try
To convince myself that I am not to blame.
She swims with
And sleeps in every moon jelly she sees.

Such is life,
And such is me.

I'm asleep all the goddamn time,
I can't believe any of this is real.
It's ineffable,
It's all in my head.
My mind is melting,
And moving,

And stretching,
And teething.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to "Eclipsical" by ORBS seem to be about a person's love for someone who is more interested in exploring the universe than in staying close to them. The lyrics reveal an unbalanced relationship in which the singer's partner is far more fascinated with space and exploration than with romance or sex. The first line states that she sleeps with the planets, a clear indication that she finds more comfort in the vastness of space than in any human connection. Meanwhile, the singer sleeps next to science, wishing that his love interest would be more interested in being close to him.

The song then goes on to describe how the two of them came from a conservative background, but the woman left the town to go in search of her own sun. She flirts with the moons and allows them to believe that they have her, while the singer is left blushing and attempting to make her laugh. She is then described as a free spirit who he cannot control or tie down. He compares her to the wind before the rain, which suggests that he knows that she will not always be there with him.

The rest of the song focuses on the singer's feelings of confusion and desperation. He talks about how he is not equipped for long-term love, and how he just wants her close to him. He describes his attempts to tie an anchor to her and make her his own, but it is clear that this is not what she wants. He is left feeling lost and unsure of what to do with his life.

i can definitely hear a bit of fear before in this, its not like Adam had absolutely no input or something

Fear Before doesn't sound anything like this...Considering that Dan Briggs and Ashley Ellyon (sp?) wrote all the music for this album, I'd say that would be a fair analysis from my end. Asleep Next to Science is quite possibly the greatest album I've ever listened to; it's amazing.
