The House
OST Anna and the King Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

There must be something
In the water
Something about my DNA
Lately I’m more my mothers daughter
Than my father
Would ever like to say
Everybody’s waking up
In a house that never gets enough sleep
Theres something waking up inside of me
Everybody’s waking up
In a house that never gets enough sleep
Theres something waking up inside of me
I could paint the walls
a different colour
To try and match the shades
I see the world in
But all it will do
Is make me wonder
Why on earth I spent
So much of my
Time hurting
Everybody’s waking up
In a house that never gets enough sleep
Theres something waking up inside of me
Everybody’s waking up
In a house that never gets enough sleep
Theres something waking up inside of me
I could leave
The light on
If you like
I could leave
The light on
if you like
And I just might
Because
Everybody’s waking up
In a house that never gets enough sleep
Theres something waking up inside of me
Everybody’s waking up

In a house that never gets enough sleep
Theres something waking up inside of me

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to "The House," a song from the soundtrack of the movie Anna and the King, are about the feeling of waking up and realizing that something inside you has changed. The first stanza suggests that the singer's relationship with her parents has shifted, and she sees more of her mother's personality and less of her father's. The second stanza describes the desire to change the environment around her, perhaps to reflect her new self-awareness. However, she realizes that this won't solve the deeper issue of why she spent so much time "hurting."

The repetition of the line "everybody's waking up in a house that never gets enough sleep" creates a sense of universal restlessness, as though everyone is struggling to reconcile their inner selves with external expectations. The final lines show a tentative willingness to let others in on this internal awakening. By leaving the light on for someone else, the singer is indicating that she's willing to be vulnerable and let others see the "something waking up inside of me."

Overall, the song speaks to the universal experience of growing and changing, and the sometimes-painful process of shedding old selves in order to become something new.
