Bring It On Down
Oasiss Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Today was just a blur, you've got a head like a ghost train
What was that sound ringing around your brain
You're here on your own, who you gonna find to blame
You're the outcast
You're the underclass
But you don't care
You're the uninvited guest who stays 'til the end
I know you've got a problem that the devil sends
You think they're talking about you but you don't know who
I'll be scraping their lives from the sole of my shoe tonight
Bring it on down, bring it down for me
Your head's in a fish tank, your body and your mind can't breathe
Bring it on down, bring it down for me
Your head's in a fish tank, your body and your mind can't breathe
You're the outcast
You're the underclass
But you don't care
Because you're living fast
And you're the uninvited guest who stays 'til the end
I know you've got a problem that the devil sends
You think they're talking about you but you don't know who
I'll be scraping their lives from the sole of my shoe tonight
The lyrics of Oasis's song "Bring It On Down" describe the feeling of being an outsider and living life fast without caring about the consequences. The opening lines ask what is the ringing sound in one's brain, as if the day has been a blur, and one's head feels like a ghost train. The song then addresses the listener as the outcast and the underclass, someone who doesn't fit in with others but doesn't care because they are living life fast. The uninvited guest who stays until the end is referenced, and the idea that the person has a problem that the devil sends is introduced. The listener thinks others are talking about them, but they don't know who is doing so.
The chorus then commands to bring it on down and bring it down for the singer. The listener's head is in a fish tank, and their body and mind can't breathe. The second verse repeats the first, emphasizing that the listener is an outcast and underclass and doesn't care because they are living fast. The idea that the person has a problem that the devil sends is repeated, and it is suggested that the listener thinks others are talking about them, but the singer will be scraping their lives from the sole of their shoe tonight.
The song expresses the idea of living outside of the world that society creates and embracing the consequences of that lifestyle. The uninvited guest who stays until the end represents the idea that the person will live fast until the very end without thinking about their actions, consequences, or the people they leave behind.

"We smashed it when we used to play it live. I love the guitar solo and
the drop down in the middle. Alan McGee obsessed over the line about
being the underclass and wanted that to be the first single. For my
part, all those songs that have a political undercurrent are real
because I was just writing them from the heart. I don't sit down and
think politics let's get to the bones of this shit. But at that point I
was unemployed, in rented accommodation, trying to make it in the world,
living from one week to the next, not knowing if you're gonna have
enough money for a pizza. You are in a political situation even if you
don't realise it, cos that is the battleground, that is the essence of
politics: accommodation, food and trying to make a living."

Im an experienced guitarist, into alternative/experimental metal and listen to the best lead axemen, but this is still one of the main solos I fantasize about breaking into on stage, after Liam sings 'I was scraping their lives off the sole of my shoe tonight'. The energy behind that solo is just massive, and Noel's riff springs off it with the same rampant energy, without losing any of it. Definitely probably my favourite Noel solo.

A great band is known for the music it makes outside of its 'hit' singles. This is the music that puts Oasis in another category.
