1) German technical progressive death metal band Obscura was founded in 2002 by guitarist/vocalist Steffen Kummerer. The band caused a stir when they - out of nowhere - toured as support for Suffocation on their European tour in 2006 and when they independently released their debut album "Retribution" that same year.
In late 2007 - after several line-up changes - the band announced a new drummer, Hannes Grossmann (ex-Necrophagist) and fretless bass player Jeroen Paul Thesseling (ex-Pestilence) as new permanent members. In early 2008 the new line-up was completed with the addition of Christian Muenzner (ex-Necrophagist) as permanent guitarist.
Obscura released its second full-length album, "Cosmogenesis" (feat. special guest appearances by Ron Jarzombek [[artist]Watchtower, Blotted Science] and Tymon Kruidenier [[artist]Cynic, Exivious]) in early 2009 via Relapse Records. The record was met with high appraisal and quickly set Obscura among the top modern death metal bands.
In 2011, the band released its third full-length album "Omnivium", which was another highly appraised record by the critics and fans alike. It features guest appearances by Tommy Talamanca from Sadist and Morean from Dark Fortress. Thematically, the album is based on Friedrich Schelling's book "On Nature's Connection to the Spirit World". This was also the last album Jeroen Paul Thesseling performed on, leaving the band in late 2011 and being replaced by Noneuclid bass player, Linus Klausenitzer.
Re(de)fining their approach, Obscura continue to create their vision of the future of extreme metal - a symbiosis of death, thrash and black metal merged with progressive elements and technical as well as compositional demand.

Desolate Spheres
Obscura Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Hold a breath and all of the creatures fall dead
Cover my ears and the universe goes silent
Not a water drop
Not a heartbeat
Not a sound from a songbird in any of the 4 corners
My outline glows against the night sky like an eclipse of the sun
And sparks follow each of my movements like a shower of meteors
I light up the sky with the Aurora
Comets appear before dawn
He greets us at death in that quiet place that is faint in our memories
That place that has always been there but we can’t quite remember
When you cross that bridge to the other world, open the door and step through
Step through the stars, swim through the gate
Touch the very boundaries of the universe
The above lyrics from the song Desolate Spheres by Obscura are a poetic and introspective exploration of the universe, death, and the human experience. The opening lines speak to the power of the individual to affect their surroundings - the singer can extinguish the sun, silence the universe and kill all creatures with a single breath or action. This is a metaphor for the human potential to create or destroy, to cause profound change either through small actions or larger endeavors.
The subsequent imagery describes a powerful mystical experience in which the singer "swallows the stars" and glows against the night sky, surrounded by meteors and the aurora. This suggests a moment of transcendence, a connection to a larger universal consciousness, and an understanding of the interconnectedness of all things. The final lines, which reference death and the crossing of a bridge to another world, suggest a belief in an afterlife or a continuation of the soul beyond the physical plane. The recurring theme of the vastness and majesty of the universe underscores the relative smallness and transience of human life, but also hints at the possibility of something larger and more enduring beyond it.
