Silver
Ocasek Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You were my silver you were my gold
You were all the things that cant be told
You were my star falling through the night
You were the one who showed me grand delight
I cant see you but I need you
And you're gone
You were my right hand you were my friend
You were always strong until the end
You were my good time you were my rave

You're the one that always set the stage
You're what I once new now I miss you
'Cause you're gone
Now I spend my lonely nights
Wishing you were here to make things right
To turn my darkness into light

You were my party you were my tea
You're the one that had faith in me

Overall Meaning

The lyrics "You were my silver you were my gold, You were all the things that can't be told" in Ocasek's song "Silver" can be interpreted as a tribute or reflection on the life of someone who was very special to the singer. The person could have been a lover, a friend, or a family member who held a significant place in the singer's life. The reference to the person being both "silver" and "gold" suggests that this individual was precious and valuable beyond measure. The line "You were my star falling through the night" invokes a sense of loss and the feeling of the person's light fading away.

The singer mourns the loss of their loved one, as reflected in the lines "I can't see you but I need you, and you're gone." The absence of this person leaves a void in the singer's life as they are reminded of their absence in everyday moments. The singer reminisces about the times they spent together, referring to the person as their "right hand" and their comrade in good times and bad. The person featured in the song could have been someone who provided unconditional support to the singer and helped them to navigate the ups and downs of life.

Overall, the lyrics in "Silver" suggest a sense of nostalgia, heartache, and loss. The singer pays tribute to someone who held a significant place in their life, and through this song, hopes to keep their memory alive.

@Mahatma Randy Ben had a problem with alcohol for a while. He often traveled in his own bus because of what alcohol abuse does to you. They did make up and Ric wrote the song "Silver" in memory of his best friend....

R.I.P. Ric Ocasek, co-founder of the Cars with Benjamin Orr.... also passed. My Cars story growing up in Central New York... was in winter of 1978 during a blizzard, some friends and I set off to see a new band in Rochester New York at a local club. Most roads were closed, but the warriors plowed through the snow covered roads with my dads 4 wheel drive. When we arrived at the club, there was one car parked in front! We went in and the club owner said the gig is still on and said the "Cars" were traveling from Boston to Cleveland (where Ric and Benjamin grew up) and he booked them to to play on the way as they were looking for club exposure. We thought they were going to cancel as no one was there, but then walked in the band and started playing. We sat on the bar 10 feet away and only about 10 people showed that night (including the owner, bartender, and us)! They were awesome, friendly guys. This was a never forget moment....

One of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard. I wonder though if Ric had some regrets about Ben...
