James Blunt
One Of The Brightest Stars Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

One day your story will be told.
One of the lucky ones who's made his name.
One day they'll make you glorious,
beneath the lights of your deserved fame.
And it all comes round.

Once in a lifetime like it always does.
Everybody loves you 'cause you've taken a chance.
Out on a dance to the moon, too soon.
And they'll say told you so.
We were the ones who saw you first of all.
We always knew that you were one of the brightest stars.

One day they'll tell you that you've changed.
Though they're the ones who seem to stop and stare.
One day you'll hope to make the grave,
before the papers choose to send you there.
And it all comes round.

Once in a lifetime like it always does.
Nobody loves you 'cause you've taken a chance,
out on a dance to the moon, too soon.

And they'll say told you so.
We were the ones who saw you first of all.
We always knew that you were one of the brightest stars.

And they'll say told you so.

We were the ones who saw you first of all.
We always knew that you were one of the brightest stars.

Overall Meaning

The song "One of the Brightest Stars" by James Blunt narrates the story of a person who has attained fame and success, but also the challenges that come with it. The first verse talks about how the person's story of success will be told, and they will be celebrated as one of the lucky ones who made a name for themselves. The second verse talks about how, in contrast, the same people who idolize and praise the person now will be the ones who criticize and scrutinize them later on. Yet, through it all, the chorus emphasizes how this success is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and despite the conflicts and controversies, everyone knew that the person was one of the brightest stars.

This song is a commentary on the fleeting and complicated nature of fame and success. It highlights the fickle nature of the media and society's shifting opinions on celebrities, a concept that James Blunt is quite familiar with, having been one himself. The song's message is one of caution and warning for those who seek fame and success, but ultimately it's a message of hope, acknowledging that the one thing that will remain constant is the person's talent and dedication to their craft.

I remember back in 2012, when I was driving to New York from Houston to pursue my education goals, well it was an excuse I needed freedom.
Being the only son, my getting-old parents didn't want me to go, but I decided to leave anyway. I still remember watching my parents in the rear view mirror, standing in the parking lot of the apartments, watching me leave. My mom waving her hand until my car didn't take a turn, she couldn't even see me as my windows were tinted, but she still kept waving until my car disappeared. This song hit real hard as I was driving on the highway, knowing well I am going away.. I made a resolve to do my best.

But I failed.. wasted two years in NY, luckily I realized as I am growing up, my parents are getting older, they are alone and they need me, so I returned and now I am working hard in my non degree job to build a house for my parents and wife and kid. I may not have a degree or a very high paying job but I am glad I returned and now I have a family that loves me and I love them 💗
