Back And Forth
Operator Please Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You keep on sayin' it's my fault
But I've been runnin' back and forth
Hiding the keys to your vault
I'll have you running back and forth, back and forth

Give it up for all the times that I thought
I'm in luck from banging on this hollow door
Give it up for all the times that I've drawn short
I know, oh, I know but

You aren't allowed to talk, oh no
You aren't allowed to talk, oh no
You aren't allowed to talk, oh no
You aren't allowed to talk

We could go back to my world
So I'm not running back and forth
I could set off the sirens
You won't be running back and forth, back and forth

Give it up for all the times that I thought
I'm in luck from banging on this hollow door
Give it up for all the times that I've drawn short
I know, oh, I know but

You aren't allowed to talk, oh no
You aren't allowed to talk, oh no
You aren't allowed to talk, oh no
You aren't allowed to talk

I've been all around this corner
Reachin' forth but backin' over
I'm not done and I'm not over
I'm not done with you

You aren't allowed to talk, oh no
You aren't allowed to talk, oh no
You aren't allowed to talk
You aren't allowed to talk
You aren't allowed to talk, oh no
You aren't allowed to talk, oh no

And maybe I'm not done with you
I said it but
Maybe I'm not done with you
I said it but

Maybe I'm not done with you
And maybe I'm not done with you

And maybe I'm not done with you
So please don't talk no more

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Operator Please's song Back and Forth seem to describe a tumultuous relationship where the singer has been blamed for things going wrong by the other person, despite their own back and forth escapades. The singer decides to take control of the situation by hiding the keys to the other person's "vault," which could symbolize their secrets or emotional baggage. By doing so, the singer feels empowered and confident that the other person will come running back and forth to them.

The chorus emphasizes the singer's control by asserting that the other person is not allowed to talk. This could either mean that the singer is fed up with their accusations and wants them to listen instead, or that they are using their power dynamic to control the other person's communication. The bridge of the song reflects on the singer's determination to make the relationship work despite obstacles and setbacks, unwilling to give up easily. They ask the other person not to speak, implying that they want to do the talking and explaining their perspective.

Overall, the song's lyrics are open to interpretation, but they convey a sense of conflict and power imbalance between the two parties, with one taking control over the other.

lisa vanderpump

They are iconic . Def the cool edgy group in highschool who didn't give aff what people thought hunny

Vinny V

Underated bands/singers are always talented.

This should have 10 million hits by now.

chris smith

+Vinny V 100 million

Samantha May

This song is so ridiculously underrated. I love it so much. <3

+Samantha May I think it's actually more unknown as opposed to underrated. Operator Please only released their CD's in Australia & New Zealand, so it's unknown to the rest of the world, only reason many of us heard them was because of a movie. I think this song could've done very well in the US, it's better than 99% of the pop music that's been released since then('08).

TassieLorenzo

They doesn't sound right, they appeared on Britain's "Later with Jools Holland".

Wikipedia it. Only released in Aussie & New Zealand.

Sorin Ispas

You are so much right!
This song it's so nice

Bree Jean

Honestly ahead of their time! If they had released their songs around 2013-2015 when this style of indie music was POPPIN they could've been huge and possibly more successful than groups likes Two Door Cinema Club, Passion Pit, San Cisco et cetera...
