Vocalist Chaka Malik and guitarist Chris Traynor met in the New York hardcore band Burn, and began playing together as early as 1992. With an early version of Orange 9mm, the duo released a live EP in 1993. The recording earned the band a contract with East West, and after picking up bassist David Gentile and drummer Matthew Cross, Orange 9mm began recording. Driver Not Included was released in 1994, and the band spent time touring with Helmet before signing with Atlantic the following year. Gentile left later in 1995, and was replaced by Taylor McLam just after recording ended for Tragic, with production by Barkmarket's David Sardy. Tragic was released in 1996; it would be three years before Orange 9mm issued a follow-up, which bore the title of Pretend I'm Human.

Give me everything I could use I'll tear it down
Give me everything I could use to feel for you
Give me everything I could use I'll tear it down
So worn away I want to say
Give me everything I could use to shelter you
Now I want to tear it down
We all learn to...
There was a time when I'd say now that it's torn down
There was a time when I say I had some faith in you
There was a time, but I'd say now that it's torn down
So worn away, I want to say
There was a time I'd say I had trust in you
But now I'd say you tore it down
We all learn to
You forced me to give up my fire, my life, my hopes, desire...
The lyrics of Orange 9mm's song "Sacrifice" are highly emotional and intense, expressing the feelings of betrayal and disappointment. The song starts with a demand to the person who has hurt the singer, to give everything they have so that the singer can "shelter" them. However, it quickly becomes clear that the singer intends to "tear it down" and destroy everything that they could have used to protect this person. This is a metaphor for the singer's feelings, as they have been betrayed and hurt to such an extent that they now want to hurt the other person back.
The next verse is a reflection of the past, where the singer had trusted and had faith in this person. But now that trust has been broken and the faith has been torn down. The last line of this verse reinforces this feeling of betrayal with the line "now that it's torn down". The chorus repeats the demand of the singer to be given everything so that they can "shelter" the other person, followed by the idea that everything will be "torn down". The chorus ends with the line "We all learn to", which can be seen as a commentary on how people learn from their experiences and grow from them.
The final line of the song "You forced me to give up my fire, my life, my hopes, desire..." is a powerful statement of the singer's feelings. They feel like this person has taken everything away from them, leaving them with nothing. This line also shows the anger and frustration that the singer has towards the other person.
Overall, "Sacrifice" is a deeply personal song about betrayal and the desire for revenge. The lyrics are full of raw emotion and power, making it a powerful song that resonates with listeners.
