You say that like I don't get that. I do. I'm not against the Klingons firing first, or the Klingons getting the jump on the D and managing to (ultimately) destroy it.

It's the way it was done. It wasn't smartly written. To quote Chuck "SFDebris" Sonnenburg about how this scene goes "The Klingons being painted as dirty, not fighting fair. Fine. But how does the crew of the D respond? With a valiant fight? No. With a buncha bullshit."

I repeat, it would have been far more compelling and made the villain far more threatening if the visor gag actually DISABLED the Enterprise so that it couldn't return fire, and were FORCED to retreat.

Then Data and La Forge work to basically reboot the ship just before the kill shot is delivered and the D can fire all it's weapons again.

Then again i'm asking too much of a movie that is literally using stock footage from the TV show, and reuses the killshot of the BOP from Star Trek VI completely unchanged.

I guess it could be said the first few volleys hit around the main deflector, causing major internal damage to power systems. And the last shot did score a direct hit to the main impulse engine, causing damage to the power grid and triggering the coolant leak. However, my blame lies entirely on Worf. Instead of locking all weapons on and firing, he gives one shot then twidlles his thumbs. Instead of firing a full spread of weapons. Riker be damned, he's a klingon, worf should know better.

To all people stating that the D was just destroyed in this film to make way for a bigger, cooler ship for the next: I get it, I understand it, I don't even have a problem with that the D was destroyed in the first place (plus, the Crash-Scene is awesome)

I issue is with the fact that it was a Bird of Prey (and an obsolete one at that) that done her in. If they had just used a different, stronger Ship, no one would even complain.

@Red Pill Freedom thanks!

The model had to be heavily refurbished so it would still look convincing under the glare of motion picture lighting and the superior picture quality of movie cameras.

Also due to the model's top-heavy design, it was a pain in the ass to operate. Hence why they designed the Enterprise-E to be much sleeker

Didnt they get rid of the enterprise D because something about it being a pain in the ass to make on movies

Jacob Kirby

Well, I am not trying to start an argument, and if I do, I am simply approaching this a kindred intellect. I'm not saying you are wrong , because, God knows, the Enterprise D deserved to be destroyed by nothing short of a Borg cube, or Romulan warbird, or even a Vor'Cha class battle cruiser. But I would just like to say one thing.

If you notice, the first torpedo launched by the bird of prey hit right above the main deflector dish, one of the most vital components on board a star ship. Is it possible that with that first hit, it crippled them, reducing their attack power, and with the second torpedo hitting right behind it, along the secondary hull, hit another vital system that rendered their phaser power compromised? I'm of the impression that if Riker had given the command, FIRE ALL WEAPONS, that bird of prey would have obliterated in the opening volley. But that is my question. Again, not trying to say anyone is wrong, just asking.

@David Roberts it certainly would!. its just people nitpicking over stupid details i just wish people would just enjoy a movie instead of moaning over flaws if they are so sensitive they should never watch a movie again.

One extra scene added could have fixed it if they showed Geordi re-modulating the shields and the Bird-of-Prey adapting to the new frequency thru the bug in his visor

SecurityEscort

well, not if the E-D set the shields to a rotating remodulation. Even if Geordi stared at the display the entire time, which he didn't and wouldn't as Chief Engineer during a battle, no human/Klingon could manually adapt the frequency as quickly as a computer can. They'd need a computer link like the Equinox had in Voyager.

If the first salvo took out the shield generator, then the scene would be fixed.

Frost Lupus

Only reason the Enterprise D was destroyed was because the writers wanted a memorable/climatic fight scene that people would remember for the otherwise mediocre move because they knew the 3 old actor's simplistic fight would be would not make the cut they were looking for.

So they added the destruction of the Enterprise when there was no actual plot reasoning to it.
While, yes, I DO like the Sovereign class better than the Galaxy, the Galaxy should of blasted the dated BOP even with the handicaps...
