Promised Land
Osanna Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
And lead them to the promised land
Holding hands and singing songs
We'll make it there before too long
It's a happier world
Now we can believe in it
Forget the life
Now we've found the life we've been
Searching for so long
Together for ever...
You and me...
And our children, that are to come,
My little one.
The first stanza of the lyrics from Osanna's song "Promised Land" envisions a joyous, utopian future where adults are leading children to a better world. The simplicity of this vision is reinforced by the words "holding hands and singing songs" which convey a sense of harmony and unity among people. The use of the phrase "promised land" speaks to the theme of hope in the lyrics; it harks back to the Biblical narrative of Moses leading his people out of slavery in Egypt towards a land that God promised to them. The happy and peaceful world the lyrics describe is a far cry from the difficult and burdensome lives most people lead, and the singers of this song want their listeners to believe in this vision of a brighter future.
The second stanza of the song focuses on the transformative power of believing in a better future. The lyrics urge the listener to "forget the life that has gone," indicating that the past may have been filled with hardships, and that dwelling on it may not be conducive to obtaining this brighter future. The words "Now we've found the life we've been searching for so long" suggest that the struggle to find hope and happiness in life may have been arduous, but the wait and effort was not in vain. The final line of the lyrics - "You and me... And our children, that are to come, My little one" - is particularly poignant; it speaks to the universal human desire to build a better future not just for oneself, but for loved ones and future generations. It also creates a sense of intimacy between the singer and their child, heightening the emotional resonance of the song.
