Walkin'
Otis Spann & Fleetwood Mac Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Written by Peter Green.

Now the cupboards are empty
But baby you don´t care
This way that I´m living
Now that you´re not here
I´m walkin?the road
But there´s a long long way to go

My socks need mending
They´re so full of holes
Take a look at my trousers
And man, how it shows
I´m walkin?the road
But there´s a long long way to go

I sit at the table
Since I got the news
I´m so full of cigarettes
And I´m drunk with the blues
I´m walkin?the road
But there´s a long long way to go

I gave you my loving
I gave you my car
Now I gotta keep moving
To the next backstreet bar

I´m walkin?the road
But there´s a long long way to go

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to "Walkin'" by Otis Spann and Fleetwood Mac speak to the feelings of emptiness, loss, and despair that come from a failed relationship.

The first verse sets the tone by describing the singer's empty cupboards. The use of the word "baby" suggests that the person they were once with doesn't care about their current state. The singer acknowledges that they are living in a different way now without their partner, and it is a difficult adjustment. The line "I'm walkin' the road, but there's a long long way to go" highlights the long and challenging journey the singer has yet to face without their loved one.

The second verse further illustrates the singer's struggle. They describe their worn-out socks and trousers to symbolize their deteriorating physical and emotional state. The holes in the socks reflect the void left by their lost relationship, while the tattered trousers visually represent their overall unraveling. Again, they emphasize that they are walking the road, implying their determination to keep moving forward despite the obstacles.

In the third verse, the singer appears to be trying to cope with the news of their partner leaving. They sit at a table, presumably to gather their thoughts, but find solace in cigarettes and alcohol. This suggests that they are seeking temporary relief but are ultimately overwhelmed by their deep sadness. The repetition of "I'm walkin' the road, but there's a long long way to go" reinforces their feeling of being on a difficult and lengthy journey.

The final verse hints at the sacrifices the singer made in the relationship, such as giving their love and car to their partner. However, now that they are alone, they must keep moving and seeking refuge in the next backstreet bar. This line implies a sense of displacement and the singer's struggle to find comfort and stability. Yet, they continue to walk the road, emphasizing the ongoing journey they must embark on without their loved one.

Overall, the lyrics of "Walkin'" paint a vivid picture of heartbreak, despair, and the arduous process of healing and moving on after a failed relationship. The repeated line underscores the lingering pain and the long road ahead for the singer as they search for a sense of fulfillment and personal growth.

Geeze!!! Nobody rocks as hard as this anymore. Fuckin' great!!!

@jimbusbin

Sid,

Didn't Christine Mc'Vee play on this release ?

@Sids60sSounds

'Perfect' question!. She was just as session player for FM at this time, but that piano could be her. I'm sure someone out there will know

@gertjankuiper8222

Sids60sSounds No, you kounavvels, this is Otis Spann on piano (and vocals).
And it's 'Christine McVie'.

@jimbusbin

Gert Jan Kuiper Calling myself and Sid "kounavvels" sure sounds like a $10 word coming from 10 cent mouth !  Now allow me to share a phrase that certainly defines you "  Pompous Ass.

@gertjankuiper8222

I'm sorry; I didn't mean to offend you. 'Kounavvel' is the mildest swear word possible in the Dutch 'dialect' that is spoken in Groningen.
I just meant that you made a silly mistake. Otis Spann was a Chicago blues piano player (and singer).

@jimbusbin

Gert Jan Kuiper Apology accepted.  For your information,  I am 64 years of age and have been listening to the Blues since my younger days in Mississippi back in the late 50s to early 60s.  I still have my LPs from the UK record label Blue Horizon and CBS (purchased by mail order from England in 67-70 time frame) which introduced me as a young man to great American Black Blues masters who had to go to England to kick-start their careers.  I do not say that in an arrogant manner  but just for you to understand that just because I misspelled Christine's last name does not mean I do not know her music.  But since this is the Holiday season and to be in good cheer, please allow this old Blues lover to suggest to you a really great LP/CD by the name of "Raw Blues".  It was released in 1967 in England and consisted of many of these great Southern Black Blues men playing on songs that included a young Eric Clapton and the always great John Mayall.  If you do not have it nor can not find it, let me know and I will send you a copy to enjoy.

Take care and I wish you a very Merry Christmas and a Prosperous New Year.

Jim Busbin. Brea/California
