Yesterdays
Otto A. Harbach Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Yesterdays, yesterdays
Days I knew as happy
Sweet sequestered days
Olden days, golden days
Days of mad romance and love
Then gay youth was mine, truth was mine
Joyous free and flaming life
Forsooth, was mine
Sad am I, glad am I

For today I'm dreaming of yesterdays

Overall Meaning

The song Yesterdays by Otto A. Harbach is a melancholic reflection on the happy and carefree days of the past. The lyrics capture the essence of nostalgia and longing for an era that has passed by. The first stanza itself sets the tone of the song, conveying how the bygone days were filled with happiness and bliss. The second stanza proceeds to describe the days when the singer was young and full of life, when truth and freedom were the guiding principles of their existence. The third and final stanza beautifully captures the feeling of sadness and joy intertwined when one thinks about the past - sad for the fact that it has passed, and glad for the memories that remain.

@RoboSlater Many many thanks. I'm the singer, or better said, I was the singer. This is a twenty years ago recording of mine, whith my group then. They were very good young musicians now well-known. You'll forgive my choice of beeing "anonimous". Thanks again

SavaEQZY

wow, you may want to stay anonimous, but this recording is so mature and true, that I would easily mistake it for some all-time jazz legend's rec, such as louis armstrong, chet baker... not similar, but the mutual weight is unmistakeable...

@LkwBkw It's a band I packed for that recording session. All musicians old friends of mine. The bass player is the same that used to play with me as a group when we were just boys. Great, aren't they?

Charles CKP Chaplin RECORDS

@oysterpippo when was it recorded? and do you know who played the instruments?

RoboSlater

Why isn't the singer identified? He sounds quite polished and, well, actually very very good.
