When I was young I was the nicest guy I knew

I reflected on the moments when I neglected important responsibilities or opportunities.

Despite my initial beliefs, I am not actually a kind and selfless person.

At one point in my life, I felt like I was the only person who mattered or contributed anything of value.

I thought I had it down for sure
I was convinced that I had everything figured out and under control.

But time went by and I was lost in what I found
As time passed, I became confused and uncertain about the things I thought I knew with certainty before.

The reasons blurred, the way unsure
I couldn't clearly understand or explain the reasons for my actions or beliefs anymore.

But as I saw that life was more than day to day
Eventually, I came to the realization that life was more complex and nuanced than I had previously thought.

I turned around, I read the writing on the wall
I faced the harsh truths about my life that I had been avoiding or denying.

In all the years you spend between your birth and death
Over the course of your entire life,

You find there's lots of times you should have saved your breath
You will encounter many situations in which you should have kept quiet or refrained from speaking.

It comes as quite a shock when that trip leads to fall
It can be painful and jarring to realize the consequences of your actions or words.

I ain't no nice guy after all
Ultimately, I am not the kind and decent person that I claimed to be in the past.
