Don't.Let.Me.Get.Me
P!nk Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Never win first place, I don't support the team
I can't take direction, and my socks are never clean
Teachers dated me, my parents hated me
I was always in a fight cause I can't do nothin' right

Every day I fight a war against the mirror
I can't take the person starin' back at me
I'm a hazard to myself

Don't let me get me
I'm my own worst enemy
It's bad when you annoy yourself
So irritating
Don't wanna be my friend no more
I wanna be somebody else

I wanna be somebody else, yeah

LA told me, "You'll be a pop star,
All you have to change is everything you are."
Tired of being compared to damn Britney Spears
She's so pretty, that just ain't me

Doctor, doctor, won't you please prescribe me somethin'
A day in the life of someone else?
Cause I'm a hazard to myself

Don't let me get me
I'm my own worst enemy
It's bad when you annoy yourself
So irritating
Don't wanna be my friend no more
I wanna be somebody else

Don't let me get me
I'm my own worst enemy
It's bad when you annoy yourself
So irritating
Don't wanna be my friend no more
I wanna be somebody else

Doctor, doctor, won't you please prescribe me somethin'
A day in the life of someone else?
Don't let me get me

Don't let me get me
I'm my own worst enemy
It's bad when you annoy yourself
So irritating

Don't wanna be my friend no more
I wanna be somebody else

Overall Meaning

The song "Don't Let Me Get Me" by P!nk is about self-doubt and criticism that lead to self-destructive behavior. The lyrics describe the singer's struggles with fitting in with society's expectations and her own self-image. The first verse describes how the singer feels incapable of succeeding in a team environment, unable to follow directions, and constantly getting into fights. She then admits to battling with her own reflection in the mirror every day, which implies that she is not happy with how she looks or who she is. The chorus emphasizes the point that the singer is her own worst enemy and that she cannot stand being with herself because it's so irritating. The second verse reveals that the singer is receiving conflicting messages from different authority figures in her life. While some are telling her that she has what it takes to make it big, others are hinting at problems and warning her that she needs to make drastic changes to succeed. The bridge of the song then shows the singer reaching out for a solution, asking a doctor to prescribe her a different kind of life where she doesn't have to be her own worst enemy.

When I was a teenager, I felt like P!nk was one of the few people who understood

@katetempleton9669

P!nk once said that when she was a teenager, music saved her life (or smth like that) but modern music can't do that. And I totally agree. When P!nk was younger, her music was about teenage problems which can be related to every teenager. Then she started singing about society, about love and relationships. And modern songs are just about big asses.

@angelsspirit154

+Kate Templeton Not all of them, and P!nk's music is also modern. I think music speaks to people in different ways. But P!nk was very very important to me when I was growing up, alongside Fall Out Boy, Tokio Hotel and BFMV

@katetempleton9669

Lemon Vermillion Well, I agree, not all of them. But the biggest part. P!nk helped me when I was having difficult times as a teenager. And so did Eminem, Evanescence, Linkin Park and some other. But I don't see any of modern singers helping kids to get through their problems.

@angelsspirit154

+Kate Templeton I agree that it seems that way but since we're past our angsty teenage days I think it's hard to tell

@katetempleton9669

Lemon Vermillion well yeah, maybe.

I was bullied really bad in middle school and high school… my mom bought me this CD, because she knew I really liked Pink, and thought it would be a good listen for me. She was right.
That year, Pink played at the Rose Garden on my 12th birthday, and my mom got me front row tickets. My mom got her attention and told her it was my birthday, and she sung “happy birthday” to me. I’ll never forget that moment. I was so truly happy that my favorite artist actually did that for me. It made me a pink fan for life. Oh, and I got awesome bragging rights!! Thank you Pink! I love you and your music.
