I Don't Want to Hear It Anymore
P. J Proby Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

In my neighborhood where folks don't live so good now.
The rooms are small most the building made of wood.
I hear the neighbors talking 'bout you and me.
Yes I've heard most every word
'Cause the talkin's loud and the walls are much too thin.

She don't really love him.
Oh that's what I heard them say.
She sure wasn't thinking of him today.
I saw her in the courtyard say that girl in room one forty nine.
Talking to a boy I've never seen before,
And standing there together don't you know they looked so fine.

No I don't want to hear it anymore
I don't want to hear it anymore.

'Cause the talk just never ends and the heartache soon begins
The talk is so loud and the walls, they're much too thin.

Lord ain't it sad, said the woman cross the hall,
That when a nice boy like that falls in love
Hey it's just too bad that he had to go
And fall for a girl that doesn't care for him at all.

No I don't wanna hear it anymore.
I don't wanna hear it anymore.
'Cause the talk just never ends and the heartache soon begins.

Oh they talk so loud and the walls are much too thin.
Oh I wish they wouldn't talk so loud and expose my heartache to the crowd.

Overall Meaning

The song "I Don't Want To Hear It Anymore" by P.J. Proby is a lament of a man who is frustrated by the constant gossip and chattering by nosy neighbors who seem to know everything about his life. In the first verse, he describes his neighborhood as a place where people don't live very well, with small rooms and buildings made of wood. This imagery helps reinforce the sense of claustrophobia and pervasive noise that will be a constant theme throughout the song.

As the song progresses, the singer becomes increasingly resentful of the neighbors who talk about him and his lover. He hears them saying that she doesn't really love him and wasn't thinking of him when she was talking to another man. The singer is clearly hurt by this gossip and wants it to stop, but feels powerless to do anything about it. He just wants to close out the noise and get some peace of mind.

The chorus of the song repeats the phrase "I don't want to hear it anymore," which reinforces the singer's desire to be left alone. He is tired of the constant talk that never seems to end and only leads to heartache. The final verse has the singer wishing that the neighbors would stop talking so loudly and revealing his personal struggles to everyone who will listen. The repeating theme of thin walls also serves to emphasize the vulnerability and lack of privacy he feels.

@rontenn I hope he gets the recognition he deserves rather than the bad press he got because he split his tight trousers on stage on the 60's. From then on the press pretty much ignored his voice and commented on his on-stage antics. In fact, he was banned by some TV stations. He's still in trouble with the law now in the UK, unfortunately.

I have never heard another singer put such emotion into a song & I include Pitney,Orbison & Elvis in that; Why Proby is not a worldwide superstar I just don't know.Maybe one day he will get recognised for the wondeful talent he has. Ron

@CaptainJimKirk. I've seen all the press reports & once again it seems he's being discriminated against. This has been going on in the U.K. since 1965 I'm afraid. In spite of all this he still soldiers on...a true legend!

@psychodamned P.J. tells it like it is! He's always done that & I admire it. Problem is if he upsets people in showbiz he gets pushed further & further out of the clique! To me he's so unique & what a voice as proved by this magic performance!
