Free As A Bird
PJ & Duncan Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I can choose what to do with my time
I can choose to say what′s on my mind
I can float on a thermal high above
Just like a dove, all around there's love
Sound on sound, layer on layer
Like a wing on a prayer, there′s hope
An escape there's sight, there's always light
Even in the dead of night
Through the glass the sky is calling
Tempting, teasing, begging, pleasing

(Free, free, free, free, free)
(Free, free, free, free, free)

Chorus:
(Free, free, free, free as a bird)
Free as a bird (Free as a bird)
(Free free free, my voice can be heard)
My voice can be heard (my voice can be heard)

I watch TV, the window to the world
Reality comes into my living room
All around me poverty, all around me greed
All around me sadness, every nation, every creed
Are we lucky, we′re not in chains?
Are we the chosen ones, or are we to blame?
Sky blues nimbus light, will it end tonight?

Through the glass the sky is calling
Tempting, teasing, begging, pleasing

Chorus:
(Free, free, free, free as a bird)
Free as a bird (Free as a bird)
(Free free free, my voice can be heard)
My voice can be heard (my voice can be heard)

(Free, free, free, free as a bird)
(Free as a bird)
(Free free free, my voice can be heard)
(My voice can be heard)

Chorus:
(Free, free, free, free as a bird)
Free as a bird (Free as a bird)
(Free free free, my voice can be heard)
My voice can be heard (my voice can be heard)

There′s always light
There's always light

Thorough the glass the sky is calling
Tempting, teasing, begging, pleasing
Thorough the glass the sky is calling
Tempting, teasing, begging, pleasing

(Free, free, free, free, free)
Are we lucky? We′re not in chains
(Free, free, free, free, free)
Are we the chosen ones, or are we to blame?

Chorus:
(Free, free, free, free as a bird)
Free as a bird (Free as a bird)
(Free free free, my voice can be heard)
My voice can be heard (my voice can be heard)

Chorus:
(Free, free, free, free as a bird)
Free as a bird (Free as a bird)
(Free free free, my voice can be heard)
My voice can be heard (my voice can be heard)

(Free, free, free, free, free)

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Free as a Bird" by PJ & Duncan convey a sense of liberation and empowerment. The singer reflects on the freedom they have to make their own choices and express their thoughts and feelings openly. The imagery of floating high above like a dove suggests a feeling of weightlessness and peace, surrounded by love and hope. The layering of sound and lyrics creates a sense of depth and complexity, akin to a prayer or a wing extending in hope. The idea of freedom is further reinforced through the repeated emphasis on being free as a bird and the notion that one's voice can be heard.

The song also touches on the contrast between the personal freedom the singer experiences and the harsh realities of the world portrayed through the TV screen. The lyrics highlight issues such as poverty, greed, and sadness that exist in every nation and every creed. The singer questions their own fortune in not being in chains and ponders whether they are chosen or to blame for their circumstances. The reference to the sky and the question of whether the turmoil will end tonight suggest a longing for peace and resolution in the face of global challenges.

Amidst the darkness and uncertainties, there is a recurring theme of light and optimism in the lyrics. The idea that there is always light, even in the dead of night, serves as a reminder that hope and brightness can be found even in the most challenging times. The repeated imagery of the sky calling, tempting, teasing, and pleasing evokes a sense of longing for something greater and more fulfilling, perhaps symbolizing a desire for a better future or a higher purpose.

The chorus of the song reinforces the message of freedom and self-expression, with the singer celebrating the ability to be as free as a bird and have their voice heard. The repetition of these affirmations throughout the song underscores the importance of individual agency and the power of one's voice in shaping their own destiny. Overall, "Free as a Bird" by PJ & Duncan portrays a journey towards self-discovery, resilience in the face of adversity, and a quest for personal and collective freedom.
