A lot of people have been asking me where they can get the drill bit and drill i have, so i figured I would just pin it to the top

I used a milwaukee hole hawg. I would not recommend buying this drill just for stumps though as this is an expensive drill. I would recommend a corded 1/2 chuck drill and bit, similar to these.

As a note for anyone who wants to try this. Depending on your area and how dense the trees are, the fire may travel through the root system underground and pop up a significant distance away. Root fires can smolder for a long time and be reignited if they run into more fuel that gives it a path to oxygen.

@Kakapo Fan doesnt even have to be roots from trees, mycelium networks can span for miles upon miles underground, and the same thing can happen and it travels and smolders underground and it starts a fire miles away.

Just a suggestion: The size of hole you were drilling is perfect size for those road flares you get in them emergency travel kits. Stick one in each hole and light it - the intense fire off them flares should ignite the greenest of stumps and take care of it self from there until gone. wind will dictate which fuse in which hole gets the draft to the center vertical one..

A foil barbecue set, placed on a tree stump, gave us a red hot root deep fire to cook breakfast on in the morning. Once that resin in the root takes hold, it'll smoulder slowly, for hours giving lots of heat too.

Watching an intentional fire is so mesmerizing. We bought a new home fairly recently and there are dozens of stumps on the property that have rotted pretty well in the middle. I think I will try this if I can find one that isn't too close to trees that we actually want to keep. Thanks for the video and instructions.

A variation of the Swedish log stove many use at camp outs. Burning a chimney log (natural hole in center) propped up on a few stones for air feed, results in fun pulse-jet like campfires too. This “tuber” rediscovered old practices, but beware of underground fires along root system that can ignite trees and structures at surprising distances. Thanks for sharing!

Nice little fire, but not the most awesome way to remove a stump. That distinction goes to my grandpa (H.E.) and his brother (A.P.) back in 1965, family farm, Russellville, KY.
Large stump, about 6ft in diameter and three ft tall. Lumber from the tree was used to build our tobacco barn.
They contemplated several strategies and decided on dynamite, but weren't sure how much to use. They drilled ten holes about two ft down, so they decided on ten sticks. In retrospect, it was a consensus that one stick would have been sufficient.
The family gathered around to watch from about 50 yards out. They used a car battery to detonate the charges. There was a flash of light followed by the loudest boom I've ever heard, to date. It rained splinters for a good five minutes. Where the stump once stood was now a fourty foot hole in the ground that was about fourty feet deep. The hole started filling up with water, slowly at first, but picked up speed. Over night, the hole was filled and overflowing. A new spring of icey cold water had erupted and was now joined with the creek that ran through the farm. We had a new pond, one less tree stump and a ringing in our ears that continues to this very day.

Great video. Much appreciated. I modified your technique by placing a cordless Hercules blower from Harbor Freight into one of the side holes using a small metal pipe to route the air into the hole. I left the blower on low speed and it accelerates the process exponentially. Took out most of a stump except for the edges on one a little bigger than the stump in your video. Also found that drilling smaller holes first with cheap 1/2" extended drill bits WITHOUT the screw tip (also Harbor Freight) followed by larger holes with a 1" by 18" Irwin ship auger (Amazon) makes drilling easier. You need a drill with serious torque. I used a Harbor Freight Bauer 7.5 amp drill and it got bogged down several times. Also tried a Bosch SDS rotary hammer drill (Bulldog) with adapter for standard drill bits but still not enough torque because of the internal and non-adjustable slip clutch. Next I will try a DeWalt 10 amp from Amazon for more torque. Thank you for posting this video - very helpful.

I came up with the same method, easily the best way. Fun and relaxing too. One more additional trick is to drill a bunch of holes from the top a few days before and fill with normal vegetable oil. Let it soak it in. That stump was nice and dry so it went nicely by itself.

Just a quick tip, when the above ground stump is gone, throw a piece of tin (I just used a piece of old corrugated barn steel) and a cinder block ontop of the below ground level stump (roots). Air will still get into the coals via the corragated ridges, it will keep the heat concentrated down in the hole, and you don't have to worry about the wind carrying embers away. It cooks the roots away much faster.
Also, I use a mix of diesel fuel and used motor oil, trans fluid or whatever I have on hand and let it soak into the stump a couple days before I light it. Seems to act like a wick in an old oil lamp. Works good.

Nice video. It's always soothing to have a fire no matter what the reason. One tip though; Use a blower, you would get the effect you get when using coals and a blower in a forge, extreme temperatures, and very good incineration.

You can use a 55 gallon drum. Cut off the top and bottom. Just fill it halfway up with wood and it will start roaring away until he stump is totally gone. The drum helps the fire draft better and speeds up the destruction of the stump. No hole drilling needed.

I'd caution anyone living in dryer regions to avoid this method if you have many trees within a 50meters of the stump.
Root systems can touch one another and when the stump burns long enough, even an unattended fire overnight, the fire can travel through the root systems. Firefighters in California have records of fires traveling through root systems as far as 7 miles from where it originated.

Yes, it works. I don’t think city ordinances would allow it but I’m rural so all is good. Neighbor across the road burned one out just like you showed. Best thing is, it smells good as it’s burning. Thanks for posting the video.

Thanks for the video. I did that same thing with a green oak stump about 43" across, but I used paraffin (wax) instead of kerosene. I drilled multiple holes in the stump. Afterward, it burned for quite a while even underground. I used my DeWalt Hammer Drill with a bit comparable to the one you used. My stump burned for quite a while. I fed it more paraffin every once in a while.

Just remember, when you burn a stump you will likely also burn the roots. Those roots are long so be aware where they run. Think of what a forest fire burned area looks like in its aftermath. When I was a park ranger, the campsite firepits were sometimes placed over roots unknowingly. Cleaning removed some of the gravel base and soil. That got down enough that the campfire was hot enough to start a root fire that ran up the tree that was hollow. We saw the smoke pouring out of a knot hole. We had started a tree fire unintentionally. Not good on a campground.

thanks for posting this. I have a 24" diameter by 36" tall honey locust stump with lots of wire fence embedded at the edge of a hardwood forest. Ground is clay, no conifers. I've been debating about whether to try pulling it out, cutting it at ground level (and ruining chains and maybe a bar) or burning it. I think I'll try burning it. Your video definitely helps. appreciate it.

I used this method and it was just a bit smaller stump but still took around 15 hours to go.
We used it to boil water and heat our dinner up it was so funny.
Destroyed my girlfriend pots but we got new ones a week later.

I did this with a stump in my yard. At first, the stump was really wet and it seemed like the roots and trunk were sucking water up from the wet ground. But I just kept the fire going for a long time and it finally sucked all the water out and then the stump dried out and it started to burn and soon it was burned out of there.

A very good video! Personally I would have cross-cut the stump with a chainsaw in the manner of a Canadian or Scandinavian log stove, soaked the heart with kerosene and or cooking oil and then used a wax candle down the centre as a starter. But you got the job done, respect! B

We had an old oak stump years ago on our farm that we wanted to get rid of. Dad was a do it yourselfer and with a tractor and two cars needing oil changes several times a year we had lots of used motor oil that we didn't know what to do with, so Dad drilled a number of holes in the top of the stump then poured the used motor oil into the holes. We covered the top of the stump with a piece of scrap plywood and held the plywood down with a heavy rock. We did this for a couple of years then one Friday morning we set it on fire. It burned until Monday afternoon. Not only did the stump burn up completely even the roots under the ground burned up completely.

We had an old oak tree stump years ago that we wanted to remove so we drilled holes in the top of it and poured our used motor oil into the holes then covered it up with a scrap piece of plywood and a large rock to keep the plywood scrap in place. The oil was soaked up by the wood fibers and the plywood kept the stump from getting wet during any rain. We did this for about a year then we set it on fire. It burned for three days stump, roots and all. We simply dumped a load of topsoil on top of the ashes and scattered some grass seed on the soil. The next spring you couldn't tell there ever was a tree there.

Never burn the stump out. Especially a dried out old stump. The fire will go right through the roots and smolder. A good way to start a small fire if in your house, shed, or other trees roots.

I have a big stump at the end of the garden, lived with it for nearly 6 years and always planned to sort it "next year". Anyway I was about to hire a root grinder and sort it this weekend. Now I'm going to try your method. Looks almost foolproof (famous last words) going to do 4 holes round the sides and light it nice and early so I don't have to sit in the garden all night. Nice video. I seen another one like it but that was done with a barrel(holes on both sides of the barrel) fitted around the stump. And then filled with brush as much as possible to burn the stump away. Boyh of these ways look like they work pretty good i might try it if one of my trees die.

Great technique. Tbh you don't actually need much prep at all for the most part. I simply built a regular campfire on mine, put a firepit cover screen over it and came back to a 3 ft deep hole in the morning. Did this in spring not fire season

I can tell you if you put a leaf blower or a fan on that, you'd have that thing producing 10x the heat. It's amazing what that'll do to increase burn rate.

Another thing u can do to help boost this process is just sit some sort of fan blowing at the fire. I use a 10 inch fan I got at walmart with a metal blade and cage and it works wonders to burn things in my giant burn barrel or just great big piles of leaves and branches out in the yard.

It's pretty shocking to see how long a fire will continue to stay hot and burn when it's covered with dirt and/or ash. I burned out a pine stump by covering it with leaves (which insulated the stump with ash). It was smoldering for days.

Yeah heat builds up over time. Those coals under the ash are hot enough to soften metal. He probably could have stirred up the ash at the end and ensure air flow, instead of building a new fire on top. She would have kept burning.

You can get a thing called a hand winch which might work .I found this out after I dug a hole about 4 ft deep and chopped off roots with an axe , the stump was still an absoloute cow to get out.

Interesting. I might have a chance to try this for myself. But I've been knocking over the trees with the root ball intact with my Construction grade FEL. Saves me a lot of post harvest clean-up. But you can bet I'll need this.

You misunderstood. I push the entire tree over with the FEL using leverage. The higher I put the bucket, the bigger the tree I push over. Then I de-stum. For what stumps I have in my Pine Forest, I'll have to use my backhoe or Dozer. I'm old and retired. Gotta use machines.

My neighbor was clearing a planned house area for me toward the front of the property. He was using a D-6 Dozer. I was using my FEL and taking down most of the trees while he used the dozer to move the downed trees. I will get some video in the Spring as we changed where we want the house more toward the back. Now we have a fairly flat 4 acre clearing. Perhaps that will become an orchard. I'll get a video of what I do.

I'm trying to burn out a stump (had the tree cut down about a year and a half ago) and it definitely needs to be dry. I got it to be self sustaining on one of the side holes but the top hole is not self sustaining yet. There's a lot of steam still when burning (I had to stop for today because of rain), but I think next burn it will work from the top hole. I should have kept the stump covered with a barrel for a few months before burning it.

This is only recommended for non-resinous tree stumps in forests that are not dominated or even just partially forested in resin-bearing trees, i.e. non-conifers. Don't try this with conifer stumps. The root systems of conifers (perhaps some other trees, but I know for sure conifers, various pines, cedar, Douglas fir, various spruces) all are resinous, and this means a ground fire can ignite the roots, which can then smolder underground, with the embers traveling for hours, days, weeks, and even several miles before flaring up into an unexpected wildfire...which you can be held accountable for. So it's not recommended for the boreal forests of Canada & Europe/Asia, and it's not recommended for the West Coast.

If you don't know what kind of wood it is, you'll want to do a scratch-and-sniff, literally chip away at the stump and get down there and sniff around to see if it has a turpentine, pine pitch, or other resinous scent. If it does, dig it out by hand with shovel and axe, use a chainsaw etc, call a contractor to grind it out, drill boreholes and cover the thing in damp epsom salt and a tarp for a few weeks before chiseling it out... Whatever it takes, just don't burn it out. The house, forest, and/or neighbors you save may be your own.

Thanks for sharing this. I have used Stump Out a lot but never thought it a good idea to light one afterward, for your mentioned fire risk reason. Now I understand a bit more regarding how the risk can occur, and there are not many situations where it is in fact safe (tree roots can run a long darn way, and if they get to other tree roots... the fire may spread). Not worth the risk, IMO. Although I guess in a really wet month, maybe it could work out oK. Good luck.

You are right. A friend of mine had a camp fire and covered it with dirt when finished. Two weeks later a nearby pine tree was burning. The only way it could be extinguished was by cutting into the centre of the tree with a chainsaw. It was thought that the camp fire had burnt a tree root, and then travelled underground to the tree.

SHAWИEE HILLS / if you ever need to do this again try this .... i threw my old fishing motor gas on a huge stump ... 2 cycle oil and gas it soaked for a week down into the roots , came home poured a little more on it and lighted the stump .... it burned and smouldered for like 9 days.... even the roots burned under ground...... used a water hose to put it out and the sun come out the next day it would catch again and have flames shooting off it..... but it got rid of it

I'm never going to know how to get rid of a stump....but I thoroughly enjoyed this video. Nice soft music, calming voice explaining what was happening and fire 🔥🔥🔥🔥😄😄😄

That works great, I've done it a few times. Didn't have money to buy or rent a stump grinder and I didn't have the foresight to think about making a mushroom garden out of it...

Great idea. I guess depending on how much it is to rent a stump removal and how much time I got, I’d make up my mind.

Since you have power out there, put the blow side of a shop vac up to one of the intakes and let her rip. It'll probably burn 5 times faster.

Thanks for watching! I love to go backpacking and the whole time i was thinking this would be perfect to cook over. Although it is probably not a good idea to be lighting stumps on fire in the forest lol

Some years ago I worked with a lady who lived on a Ranch in the Sierra Foothills in California. She told me that's how they removed stumps (fir trees). They would drill holes in the stump (don't know if they drilled aeration holes from the sides) and used self lighting barbeque briquets. She said you have to be careful because the fire not only burned the stump but also got the roots too.

More likely those are carpenter ants doing damage to that stop not termites but it is possible. And I loved the video me and my dad use pole hog all the time to drill holes through beans to run wires a tool is useful for all kinds of stuff great video

Keep in mind what may happen when you set roots on fire... In dry places the ember can travel a long way for a long time. Setting other things on fire. Pulling an old stump is always the better method. No worries about a possible Forrest fire.

I actually discovered a forrest fire when I was 19, a previous occupant at a campground had a cooking fire going and it continues to smolder and lit the roots of a Douglass fir tree on fire, it looked like it had been burning awhile when we arrived with my summer camp lodge, flames were coming up out of the ground right towards the base of the tree. We called up the ranger etc, his team dug it out, etc.

Some locations do not allow stumps to be burned for removal for fear of underground fires.

I will strongly recommend not to leave the can open when putting the stump ti fire.

Got a tip for you. I just removed a long leaf yellow pine stump. Above ground stump approximately 24 inches dia. I was able to pull the stump, tap root and all out of the ground with come-a-long. Amazingly, the tap root was huge, around 5 ft in length, and approx 24' - 26' in. dia all the way down. The way I did it was to dig a hole around the stump, cut the lateral roots, and then fill the hole with water saturating the ground. Then I hit the stump with sledge hammers just enough to create a condition of Liquefaction about the stump. Also helps if you keep the pushed up ground dug away so as to allow the stump to pull in direction of force.

Got me a new idea for my stump! Thank you! I've heard you can drill some holes and put Potassium in them and that'll decay it out too. Never tried it, but this is faster.

This method works. I drill all my holes first . The side holes feed oxygen to the fire. 24 hrs later 85% gone
