1)In 1979 Gyula Vikidál left the legendary band P.Mobil and entered Dinamit. A year after Sándor Bencsik "Samu" (lead guitars) and István Cserháty "Pityi" (Hammond organ) left P.Mobil as well and formed a new band named Pandora's Box after the title of a Procol Harum. The
other members were singer Varga Miklós, drummer István Szabó and bassist József Sáfár "Öcsi" who used to play in the band V'73.

Their first single was released in 1981 entitled Halálkatlan/A bolond. In 1982 they released their first album under the title P.Box with the tracks: Másnak szól, Egérszerenád, Éjféli szekér, Dödöle, Hölgyválasz, Szupergép, A levél, Nekem ne mondd, A bolond. That year they gave a big concert at Budapest Sport Arena together with the famous bands Edda and Karthago.
In 1983 Miklós Varga left the band to be the singer of a Swedish-Hungarian band called Safari. Meanwhile the band Dinamit broke up, so it was obvious to choose Vikidál Gyula as the new singer.
They soon released their second single which contains one of their biggest hit A zöld, a bíbor és a fekete written in honour of the great guitarist Radics Béla who tragically died in 1982.

In the August of 1983 the greatest Hungarian rock opera István A Király written by Szörényi Levente and Bródy János in which the two singers played the two main caracters, and gained great success with it.
Their next album entitled Kő kövön contains the following songs: Soha nem elég, Ingajárat, Maradj a vonalban, Fantomlány, Valami Rock and Roll, A zöld, a bíbor és a fekete, Engedj, Az ideges, Vágtass velem (Kő kövön), and the next year the band was invited to play together with the bands Iron Maiden and Motörhead in Budapest.

They released their third album Ómen in 1985, but with two new members, Zselencz "Zsöci" László on bass from Edda and Pálmai Zoltán who also played in the bands P.Mobil and Hobo Blues Band. Ómen contains the following songs: Ómen, Bukott angyal, Éjszakai Vágta, Szűz a máglyán, Árulók kapuja, Átok és ígéret, Pandora tánca, Névtelen hős.
Vikidál Gyula left the band to be an actor and play in musicals, and in 1987 Bencsik Sándor "Samu" died suddenly, the circumstances to his death are still misty.

After 13 years Cserháty István recalled the band in 2001 with new members singer Koroknai Árpád, guitarist Sándor József "Günter", bass player Ferenczy Tibor and drummer Bodó Tamás. The new album was released in 2002 entitled Reményre Ítélve wich contains the following tracks: Múlt és jelen, A szerelem ára, Fantomlány (az eredeti dal újrafeldolgozása), Nekem az éj, Legyek az első, Semmi nem lesz jobb, Álmodj!, Hódítás, Milyen legyen?, Óriás és törpék, Van -e még?, Várj még!, Az én filmem, Árnyék. They were invited to play together with Deep Purple and Europe in Hungary.
They also released a DVD filmed in 2001's Sziget Festival in Budapest, which contains 4 songs in English as bonus tracks.
On the 4th of August 2005 they released their last album Pangea, with the songs Veled múljon el, Csak az ég, Pangea, Ezer év, Láss az én szememmel, R'n'r az égig, Szél, Másik srác, Dőljön le a fal, Jégkorszak and Még egy perc.

Sadly soon after the release of their last album Cserháty István "Pityi" died on the 21st of August 2005. He had been suffering from cancer since the beginning of the year, he spent a long time in hospital and left it for some days only to record the Hammond parts on the new album.

After his death the band gave some concerts with Krisztián Szabó on keyboards, but could not cope with the lack of "Pityi" who used to be not only the keyborad player but the manager and boss of the band as well. They gave their last concert on the 11th of November 2006 in Budapest then closed Pandora's Box forever.

2) In 1989, Jim Steinman gathered a group of female singers and formed the one-album band Pandora's Box. Band members were Ellen Foley (who had already played Wendy in 1977's Neverland workshop production and sung with Meat Loaf in Bat Out of Hell), Holly Sherwood (former Fire Inc.), Elaine Caswell, Gina Taylor and Jim Steinman himself.

The album was released along with a video, directed by Ken Russell, for "It's All Coming Back to Me Now" (later covered as a hit by Céline Dion), but a planned tour was scrapped. The album was not released to the United States originally. Sales for the album were modest, though Steinman continues to be very proud of it. Many fans and critics consider it one of his best works. The track "Original Sin" was recycled and featured prominently in the musical show Tanz der Vampire. The album's final track "The Future Ain't What It Used to Be" was re-recorded for the MTV movie of Wuthering Heights starring Erika Christensen.

In 1994, singer Taylor Dayne covered a slightly reworked version of "Original Sin" on the soundtrack of the movie version of The Shadow. Meat Loaf also covered "Original Sin" on his 1996 album Welcome to the Neighborhood.

3) PANDORA's BOX is a heavy metal (nu metal) band based in Naga City, Camarines Sur in the Philippines.

@@lapis591 The original song was written by Jim and given to Meat Loaf for Bat Out of Hell 2 in 1986. They decided to use I'd Do Anything For Love instead and save this song for Bat Out of Hell 3. Jim always thought it was more a female vocalist song anyway and Meat heard it as a duet which was part of the inspiration behind IDAFL, he finally got his wish in 2006 after the settlement. RIP to both of them. Jim was a special guy, it hit me harder when he passed a while back than Meat Loaf but both losses are tragic. This is the original studio recording, but this is a fluid concept with its history and the fact that PB didn't write it to begin with regardless. Great jam no matter who did it...

All the videos for songs written by Jim Steinman have a gothic theme. Some are downright creepy like this one and “Total Eclipse Of The Heart.” Others are less creepy, like the videos for both Meat Loaf and Celine Dion’s versions of this song; as well as Meat Loaf’s “I Would Do Anything For Love (But I Won’t Do That),” but they still have the motifs of mansions, fire, sex, and death.

Meat Loaf didn't steal this song. He came to an agreement with his friend "Jimmy Bob" as Meat Loaf calls him (and yeah, these two are STILL friends, despite a few falling outs, that good friendships sometimes go through) to record it.

False. Meat starting recording this song and Steinman SUED him (and won a judge's injunction) to stop it. Jim simply told Meat it was a "woman's song." And that was it.

Singers can only do mechanical covers once another singer has performed it. As the song had never been released, Steinman had control over its first singer, and sued. After it was released, he couldn't stop Meat Loaf.

There were a lot of back and forths on this one. Celine Dion got the first cover of the song (it was originally recorded and released in 1989 by Pandora’s Box). Steinem’s camp DID block Meatloaf’s camp from recording and releasing it back then. However, Steinem also gave his blessing down the road for the duet.

I admit I love the Meatloaf version. The mix of those two voices and the passion. I was slightly disappointed with the fact that all they did was strip the vocals out of the original and replace it when Celine’s voice. When an artist redoes a previously existing song, they deserve a background that fits.

She's not very original--and I find her voice to be quite ordinary most of the time and incredibly annoying at others. Can't really figure out why her version of this song took off when others didn't. Someone must owe her some favors.

I'm not a Celine fan but this is her best song; she took it to another level. You can hear how she was influenced by this recording and Elanes phrasing.I never knew this was Elanes 'Big moment" it explains a lot about her attitude. The production on the Celine version is much better as well. I knew Elanie; she's a real jerk; not a very humble person. Years ago, decades actually, during an absolute low point in my time in NYC, I went to see her in a club when she hadn't been active in years. She'd gotten fat, really big, and hadn't done live dates in years; maybe she was a mom I have no idea. Other than a few friends of hers I was the only one who showed up. No need to rant on and on, she was a real asshole to me at a time I was incredibely depressed. I realized she was just an ok vocalist, that as a person she was a condescending bitch. Her and all her friends were crummy people. Shawn colvin, Suzie, all a bunch of jerks. I'll always regret I stuck it out so long hanging out with them trying to make fweinds, they were all such cunts. Shawn was another one; a fantastic singer and so cute, but wow as a person just a fucking asshole. Now she looks like a Dyke. Karma is a bitch.

@@FeatheryBird - I don't know that she was influenced by this version so much as she was influenced by Jim Steinman (the writer of the song). You can easily tell that this song sounds just like a Meatloaf song...or a Bonnie Tyler's Sudden Eclipse of the Heart. Steinman songs are unmistakable in their sound and this one is no different.

Celine just sang it how Steinman told her to sing it (just like Meatloaf and Bonnie Tyler before her...hell, even Air Supply on their Making Love out of Nothing at All song).

Supposedly, Meatloaf wanted to do this song for Bat Out of Hell II but they went with another song and then he wanted to do it on BOHIII but Steinman said no and they actually went to court over it.

I’m not sure it can really be classified as a cover when Pandora’s Box sang a song written by someone else, who then went on and gave it to Celine and worked on it with her.

For it to have been a cover, I feel it should have been written by or for Pandora’s Box, but it wasn’t. Jim Steinman wrote it in 1986 for Meatloaf, this version is a cover in and of itself. It just happens to be the first version.

Anyway, Celine took it to dramatic heights that this version could never come close to.

All 3 versions are amazing to listen too, but Celine Dion's is the best version. However, you have to give great respects for this version's video, it must have stirred up a lot of controversy, considering the sexual nature of the video for 1989. I wouldn't mind seeing a revival of this band

Also, Elaine is nowhere near Celine’s level vocally.
She had a pretty average voice with mediocre technique. She’s scooping most of the higher notes, she cannot sustain the belts, and her pronunciation is annoying and hickish. Makes it sound like a country song lol

Jim Steinman also wrote the script for this video, and it was he who wrote the song.
"Ken Russell directed the video, which was filmed at Pinewood Studios in Buckinghamshire. Steinman wrote the script, based on Russell's "Nessun Dorma" segment in the compilation opera movie Aria."

Are you kidding me? This is my first time ever seeing this as well and I can't say it was anything short of EPIC. Weird, over the top eroticism mixed with life and death symbolism, LEATHER, and all the 80's kitsch (in retrospect) and camp you can shake a stick at. I originally only came here as a sort of short detour on an ongoing and gleefully bizarre submersion into the works of Ken Russell (who directed this video); considering I didn't even know a version of this song other than the Celine Dion one existed (although I should have known better- but to be fair it was almost 20 years ago when her version came out and I was only 10 years old and at this point have still not exactly preoccupied myself with following her career much) and the fact that I was not even a fan of her version when it came out (and that's putting it lightly), that I even stayed for half of the song much less the entire thing and gladly listened to the music is really saying something.
I will literally give anything a chance if Ken Russell's career defining exercise in "overstimulation, questionable taste and pure excess" is involved.

@emlodik HAHA I haven't listened or watched the various European versions in a while, I just remember that they sing one bit in English. The Broadway version is strange in general ;) Wasn't Seize the Night newly composed for Vampires too? But otherwise, yeah not much at all... Of course Steinman has always reused bits of his material (the Bad for Good bit ending up in I Need a Hero, etc etc) and also apparently takes FOREVER to write a song. It's better than that Queen musical anyway :P

Not accurate. Celine’s version had Roy Bittan and Jim, obviously, but several personnel changes (Tim Pierce, notably, replacing Eddie Martinez on guitar) and all parts were re-recorded fresh, as evidenced by differences in timing, swing/push/pull, and tone. Also, Celine outsings Elaine on every metric, despite the melodies being the same. Easier, bigger belts. Better breath and vibrato control. Wider dynamics. To me, this version falls flat in comparison, despite being reasonably good.

Nah - she was a Meat Loaf discovery, considering that she toured with him and was featured on many of his later albums - not a Steinman-originated talent. Still, though, a great talent and very nice, down-to-earth person. :-)
