The Paper Kites’ song “Young” explores the concept of growing up and aging. The lyrics describe how people try to hold onto youth and innocence as they age, but eventually realize that it’s futile. The song begins by describing how people remain awake only because their eyes are open. They walk around in the dark, trying to hold onto things they’re losing. The second verse talks about how people become more cautious as they age, and realize the consequences of their actions. They try to sow good things to reap good things in return. The chorus repeats the idea that people wake up and go out into the world with their heads in the clouds, meaning they’re still naive and optimistic.
The third verse is the most introspective, acknowledging that the singer was once like the people they’re describing. They realize that everyone goes through the same process of growing up and becoming more cautious. The final repetition of the chorus changes slightly, saying that everyone is now awake but doesn’t go out into the world with their heads in the clouds anymore. They’ve grown up and become more grounded in reality. The outro of the song describes how time takes a toll on people, but they need it to grow.

Imagine if we did a music video like this and somehow got a picture of everyone in the world and we all try desparately to pause it and see our friends and family's faces. Not only is the music beautiful and the video as a whole is *beautiful*, but does anyone else think that these people are beautiful in their own way? Maybe it’s something about the number of people there are here, contributing towards a common project. Makes me imagine they share an interest in the paper kites. These people could be any one of us watching. I don’t know. It’s hard to put into words, but I think this is a very calm form of art, and calm just washes over me while I watch and listen :)
