The song "Tu" by Papon and Shreya Ghoshal is a romantic ballad that expresses feelings of deep attachment and love. The song begins by describing the beloved as everything to the lover - their tale, their goblet, their habit, and even their worship. Tu - Bobby Jasoos | Where the word #Epic falls short to describe this!
There are very few compositions that have impacted me deeply over a period of time and Tu from Bobby Jasoos seems to be one of them. While I loved the song in the first instant of hearing, it continued to grow on me as I listened to it more - the deep voice of Papon, the beautiful melody composed by Shantanu da, Shreya's technical prowess and Swanand Kirkire's beautiful lines. It seemed like a 'Fantastic Four' combination that gave to life a timeless, semi-classical, duet number superlative in all aspects.
I think if you are interested in the genesis of the song - do watch this 'making' video and see how everyone reacts beautifully to this composition, especially Dia Mirza, the producer who jumps out hearing the melody.
Coming to the composition, what I love the most about this is the melody and hats-off to Shantanu da for this. While it remains to be a semi-classical number at its heart, but the whole visualisation of Golconda Fort, the musical arrangement along with choice of instruments gives it a distinct Sufi touch, which I think is beautiful and Papon (who is used to singing ghazals) was the perfect vocalist to pull this off and he just owned this song.
The arrangement was perfect and went with the whole Nizam/Hyderabadi setting at the Golconda fort. The song never felt like a modern, pop song. It carried a royal touch with use of tabla, flute, harmonium and a great diversity of classical Indian string instruments throughout the song. For eg. you'll find mandolin like instrument being played at @ during interlude and a brief appearance of Sitar at @. You'll also find Sarangi at @ when Papon beautifully sings and emotes the line - ranjishein bhool kar chale aao. Then comes Sarod during the second interlude at @ bringing a refreshing new flavour to the composition. At places the harmonium also follows the melody beautifully brining the sufiana element (like at @).
Coming to vocalists, Papon and Shreya seem to be the perfect choice for this! Although, perhaps this is their first duet number ever. (they have done a bunch later - check Esheche Raat, Rimjhim Gire (recreated version) and Ghar Bhara Sa Lage from Shikara). In fact I love this video where Shantanu-Papon-Shreya trio do this interview in Bengali where they jam in an unplugged setting.
Coming to this song, Papon is just super. His voice is perfect, his modulations are spot on and his emotions are heavenly!
There are so many places I love from Papon's part:
- like when he does 'aao' at @ right i the first line and improvises in the second
- when he signs 'ranjishein bhool kar chale aao' at @ - it just melts your heart!
- both the antaras where Papon goes to a very low scale and holds the lower notes so beautifully. His earthy voice just touches you beautifully.
Shreya on the other hand (in the reprise version of the song) is technically immaculate all throughout the song. In Papon's version she sings the chorus parts at places and does a beautiful job.
Coming to the lines, like they mention in the 'making' video the melody itself was amazing and the lines just makes the whole composition magical! Swanand retains the whole sufi-romantic mood of the song with choice of urdu words with some beautiful lines. I loved this one the most - marziyaan mod kar chale aao - and the way Papon sang it with the murkis was perfect justice to this top class poetry from Swanand Kirkire.
Last but not the least visualisation - generally I don't touch upon this aspect in my reviews, but it just took the composition to a new level in this one and hence I couldn't help but mention it. The setting of Golconda Fort and the actors costume adds onto the whole royal narrative that the composition carries. Kudos to the crew to come together beautifully as a team to make this epic track.
I must end by saying that I felt close to the spiritual power listening to this composition. I feel blessed, happy and thankful to the creators of this epic. Like I said in the title, definitely the word @ seems short of describing this beauty.
