Don't Forget Me
Pat Benatar Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I sit by my window, watch the clouds go by
Every moment is a one that I'm
Crying my heart out cause I'm not there with you
I feel like a fool I've got so much shame
I know I should just walk away
But what will I do with all this pain I feel for you

Please don't leave me
Not this time
I don't think I can survive it
I'll have nothing
Not even my pride
So please don't leave me
Not this time

So many nights I lay in bed
I stare at the place where you laid your head
I wonder who's lying with you instead of me
I can't make you feel it if it isn't there
No way to convince you if you just don't care
Look in your heart maybe you could spare a place for me

Please don't leave me
Not this time
I don't think I can survive it
I'd have nothing
Not even my pride
So please don't leave me
Not this time

You made your point
It's clear to me
There's somewhere else you'd rather be
But I can't bear the thought of life without you

I sit by my window, watch the clouds go by
But I can't bear the thought of life without you

Please don't leave me
Not this time
I don't think I can survive it
I'd have nothing
Not even my pride
So please don't leave me
Not this.
Please don't leave me
Not this time
I don't think I can survive it
I'd have nothing
Not even my pride

So please don't leave me
Not this time

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Pat Benatar's song Don't Forget Me speaks about unrequited love and the pain that comes with it. The song's narrator, who is deeply in love with someone who doesn't feel the same way, is pleading for them not to leave her. She cries out her heart as she watches the clouds go by, and wonders who is lying next to the one she loves instead of her. She acknowledges that she knows it's time to walk away, but the pain is too much to bear. She fears that if the one she loves leaves, then she will have nothing – not even her pride.

The song's lyrics reveal the hopelessness of the situation. The singer knows that the one she loves has made their intentions clear, and they would rather be with someone else. She cannot force them to feel differently about her or convince them to stay with her. She is left with nothing but the fear of a life without them. The song's repeated plea of "Please don't leave me, not this time" highlights the intense emotions that the singer is feeling and her desperation to hold on to the one she loves.

Overall, the song is a heart-wrenching story of unrequited love, and the pain that comes with it. It speaks to anyone who has ever been in that situation, and it tugs at the heartstrings with its raw and emotional lyrics.

i remember my father showing me this movie
and i remember sitting next to him

and watching him re-experiencing his childhood

slowly crying on the inside
i think he shed a tear or two, which he extremely rarely does at films

i remember him looking over at his kid
seeing himself in me

seeing one of his favorite movies captivating me

at the end i shed a tear too

this is a breathtaking film that was made excellently

one of the very few movies i don't consider movies
but

cinematic experiences

@Thorsten-Tom-Martin

[Refrain]
Hey, hey, hey, hey
Ooh, woah

[Verse 1]
Won't you come see about me?
I'll be alone, dancing, you know it, baby
Tell me your troubles and doubts
Giving me everything inside and out and
Love's strange, so real in the dark
Think of the tender things that we were working on
Slow change may pull us apart
When the light gets into your heart, baby

[Chorus]
Don't you forget about me
Don't, don't, don't, don't
Don't you forget about me

[Post-Chorus]
Will you stand above me?
Look my way, never love me
Rain keeps falling, rain keeps falling
Down, down, down
Will you recognize me?
Call my name or walk on by
Rain keeps falling, rain keeps falling
Down, down, down, down

[Refrain]
Hey, hey, hey, hey
Ooh, whoa

[Verse 2]
Don't you try and pretend
It's my feeling we'll win in the end
I won't harm you or touch your defenses
Vanity and security, ah
Don't you forget about me
I'll be alone, dancing, you know it, baby
Goin' to take you apart
I'll put us back together at heart, baby

[Chorus]
Don't you forget about me
Don't, don't, don't, don't
Don't you forget about me

[Bridge]
As you walk on by
Will you call my name?
As you walk on by
Will you call my name?
When you walk away
Or will you walk away?
Will you walk on by?
Come on, call my name
Will you call my name?
[Outro]
I say, la, la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la
La-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la
La-la-la-la, la-la-la-la
La-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la
La-la-la-la, la-la-la-la
La-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la
When you walk on by
And you call my name
When you walk on by....

This movie is a straight masterpiece and they better never try and remake it. There will never be another Breakfast Club movie with an epic song to go with it. Shout out to Simple Minds!

@redllyon5196

Only thing that came close to it was the parody in Not Another Teen Movie and that was more of a nod to the genius of the movie. And it had the principle in it!

The song was meant for Billy Idol who recorded it, but they decided to go for Simple Minds version. As they say the rest is history!

@BrianOSheaPlus

It wouldn't make sense to any other generation, and they'd never make a movie just for us aging Gen X'ers. They could maybe make a movie about Gen Z for Gen Z'ers, but that would be a whole different movie, and I wouldn't have a problem with that.

I am proud to be a child of the 80s, we had the best music, the best movies and the best of times.
