The Mirror
Patrick Wilson Emmy Rossum & Gerard Butler Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Phantom:
Insolent boy
This slave of fashion
Basking in your glory
Ignorant fool
This brave yought suitor
Sharing in my triumph
Christine:
Angel I hear you
Speak, I listen
Stay by my side
Guide me

Angel, my soul
Was weak
Forgive me
Enter at last, master

Phantom:
Flattering child
You shall know me
See why in shadow I hide
Look at your face
In the mirror
I am there inside

Christine:
Angel of music
Guide and guardian
Grant to me your glory

Angel of music
Hide no longer
Come to me
Strange angel

Phantom:
I am your angel of music
Come to me angel of music

I am your angel of music
Come to me angel of music

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "The Mirror" from the musical Phantom of the Opera beautifully depict the complex dynamics between the three main characters: the Phantom (played by Gerard Butler), Christine (played by Emmy Rossum), and Raoul (played by Patrick Wilson). The song serves as a confrontational dialogue between these characters, revealing their true desires and vulnerabilities.

In the first verse, the Phantom addresses Raoul, calling him an "insolent boy," a slave of fashion who basks in his own glory. The Phantom feels superior, describing Raoul as an ignorant fool who dares to compete for Christine's affections. On the other hand, Christine speaks directly to the Phantom, the "Angel" she hears. She asks him to stay by her side and guide her, as she recognizes her dependence on him for artistic success.

In the second verse, the Phantom responds to Christine, claiming that she will come to know him and understand why he hides in the shadows. He invites her to look at her face in the mirror, subtly alluding to his presence within her. Christine, still yearning for the guidance and brilliance the Angel of Music can provide, asks him to reveal himself fully and not hide any longer. She addresses him as a "strange angel," unaware of the true extent of the Phantom's obsession with her.

The lyrics of "The Mirror" highlight the complex relationships and conflicting emotions among the characters, showcasing their desires for power, guidance, recognition, and love. It captures the essence of the Phantom of the Opera's storyline, where passion, obsession, and longing intertwine.

There are dozens of stage performances that were far superior to the travesty that was the movie. The only good part about the movie was Emmy’s “Wishing”

I have a theory, she's not just mesmerized by his singing and paternal voice, I think the "fake fog" is a powerful hallucinogen (how else do chandeliers look like waving arms?)

What do you think?

Gerry is and always will be my #1 Phantom. Some people might think his voice is too loud or forced, but I think that his voice produces a raw texture that the Phantom should have considering he taught himself how to sing. It also sounds really mesmerizing and entrancing, especially for a guy that has never sung before. #TEAMPHANTOM
