When the Colors Die
Peter La Grand Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
We all sigh and step into the shadows
When the lines of the horizon
Fade from blue on blue to black
And the streetlights come full cycle
Nothing can bring the morning back
If we could keep the sun from making shadows
Or if I could say I'm sorry
For the silences I brought
It should not take a miracle
But I need more grace than I thought
Now, when the colors die
In the early afternoon
Lately every time
I just sigh and think of you
The lyrics of Peter La Grand's song invite the listener to a melancholic mood. The song begins by describing the end of the day and the transition from the warm and lively colors of the daytime to the cold and dark hues of the evening. The singer refers to shadows as the physical manifestation of the fading vibrancy of the world, but also as a metaphor for inner gloom and sadness. The reference to the horizon fading from blue on blue to black further emphasizes the sense of loss and hopelessness.
As the streetlights take over the fading sunlight, the lyrics address regret and apology. The singer seems to address a specific person, acknowledging the silences brought by their previous interactions. The last lines of the verses express the need for something extraordinary, such as a miracle or a higher level of grace, to remedy the ongoing pain.
The chorus revolves around a repetition of the initial verse, but with the addition of a personal element. The singer indicates that whenever the colors die, they think of someone. The connection between the changing colors and this person may signify a deeper emotional attachment or memory association.
Overall, the song conveys a sense of yearning and mourning. The winter imagery creates a somber atmosphere, and the lyrics describe a state of emotional vulnerability and regret.
