16 TONS
Peter Thorup Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I was born one mornin' when the sun didn't shine
I picked up my shovel and I walked to the mine
I loaded sixteen tons of number nine coal
And the straw boss said "Well, a-bless my soul"
You load sixteen tons, what do you get
Another day older and deeper in debt
Saint Peter don't you call me 'cause I can't go
I owe my soul to the company store

Some people say a man is made outta mud
A poor man's made outta muscle and blood
Muscle and blood and skin and bones
A mind that's a-weak and a back that's strong

You load sixteen tons, what do you get
Another day older and deeper in debt
Saint Peter don't you call me 'cause I can't go
I owe my soul to the company store
You load sixteen tons, what do you get
Another day older and deeper in debt
Saint Peter don't you call me 'cause I can't go
I owe my soul to the company store

I was born one mornin', it was drizzlin' rain
Fightin' and trouble are my middle name
I was raised in the canebrake by an ol' mama lion
Cain't no-a high-toned woman make me walk the line

You load sixteen tons, what do you get
Another day older and deeper in debt
Saint Peter don't you call me 'cause I can't go
I owe my soul to the company store
If you see me comin', better step aside
A lotta men didn't, a lotta men died
One fist of iron, the other of steel
If the right one don't a-get you
Then the left one will

You load sixteen tons, what do you get
Another day older and deeper in debt

Saint Peter don't you call me 'cause I can't go
I owe my soul to the company store

Overall Meaning

Peter Thorup's song "16 Tons" tells the story of a coal miner who spends his life working in a mine under difficult conditions. The song opens with the delivery of the singer's birth under the ominous sign of a sunless morning. The lyrics portray the physical toll that manual labor takes on the miner - "I picked up my shovel and I walked to the mine, I loaded sixteen tons of number nine coal," and the subsequent impact on his life - "Another day older and deeper in debt." The miner is clearly overworked and underpaid, as he owes his soul to the company store and can never leave his job. He is not in control of his life, as he is forced to work for the company for little or no reward.

Furthermore, the song discusses the societal perception of the working class. According to the lyrics, some believe that a man's worth is determined by his strength and ability to work under harsh conditions, "A poor man's made outta muscle and blood, Muscle and blood and skin and bones, A mind that's a-weak and a back that's strong." The song thus highlights the exploitative nature of working conditions and the limited options available to some members of the working class.

@munk54

Играл с Алексисом Корнером в New Church,  C.C.S, а затем в Snape, с музыкантами из King Crimson.

Serenade to a cooko. Hilsen Werner
