Prior to signing with Arista Records in 2000, Vassar's songwriting talent was no stranger to the airwaves, penning number-one hits for some of the most popular country artists of the late 1990s: Jo Dee Messina ("Bye, Bye" and "I'm Alright"), Alan Jackson ("Right on the Money") and Tim McGraw ("My Next Thirty Years" and "For A Little While"). He has also written songs for Collin Raye ("Little Red Rodeo") and Blackhawk ("Postmarked Birmingham").
Vassar also co-owns a piano bar outside Nashville, Tennessee, where he performed his own material prior to signing a record deal.
Baby you

And maybe there's a few things
I need to explain
So what if I call you at work for now reason
And I sent you those flowers today
So what if my friends tell me
They never see me
And everyone's sayin' I've changed
If you think I always think about you
And I dream about you day and night
If you think for a moment I can't live without you
And maybe I've fallen in love with you
Baby, you're right
Baby, you're right
Somehow, somewhere I went and crossed
Over the line
And I let you see the man that was hiding inside
It's highly irregular, I must confess
No this usually isn't my style
Oh I know my heart's beatin' out of my chest
And I just can't do nothin' but smile
If you think I always think about you
And I dream about you day and night
If you think for a moment I can't live without you
And maybe I've fallen in love with you
Baby, you're right
Baby, you're right
Baby, you're so wrong if you think
That you're holdin' on just a little too tight
But, if you're believin' that I'm never leavin' you
Baby, you're right
If you think I always think about you
And I dream about you day and night
If you think for a moment I can't live without you
And maybe I've fallen in love with you
If you think that I'm hopeless without you
There's no way I can put up a fight
If you think for a moment I can't live without you
And maybe I've fallen in love with you
Baby, you're right
Baby, you're right
The lyrics of Phil Vassar's song Baby You represent a man who is struggling to express his love for a woman. The lyrics are centered around the theme of confessing one's love and opening up about true emotions, which is complicated for some people. The singer realizes that his behavior may seem odd or strange, but it is all out of love for this woman. The chorus is filled with statements about how deeply the singer cares for her, and how he cannot imagine living without her. He is acknowledging the possibility that he has fallen in love with her and there is no shame in admitting it.
The tone of the song is sensitive and emotional as the singer tries to reveal what he feels inside. The music is slow and melodic, perfectly fitting the song's mood. The singer tries to defend his feelings and reveals his deep love for the woman, firm in his belief that he needs her in his life. The lyrics represent a common human struggle of expressing one's true feelings, a battle that often leads to opening up and discussing emotions.
