Prior to signing with Arista Records in 2000, Vassar's songwriting talent was no stranger to the airwaves, penning number-one hits for some of the most popular country artists of the late 1990s: Jo Dee Messina ("Bye, Bye" and "I'm Alright"), Alan Jackson ("Right on the Money") and Tim McGraw ("My Next Thirty Years" and "For A Little While"). He has also written songs for Collin Raye ("Little Red Rodeo") and Blackhawk ("Postmarked Birmingham").
Vassar also co-owns a piano bar outside Nashville, Tennessee, where he performed his own material prior to signing a record deal.

To feel the sunlight on my skin
But in the heat I'd start to hunger
For that autumn chill again
I always spent my time anticipating
Things to come
But now I wish that I could slow the
World down just this once and
Stand still
I'm right where I wanna be
Holding you in the middle of the moment
Of my life
The way I feel
I don't care what's in front of me
Or what's behind me I just wanna
Stop the wheel
And stand still
I have driven by a sunset
Let it pass without a glance
I took so many things for granted
Counting on a second chance
But touching you right now is something
I don't wanna miss
I know my finest hour is the one I'm living in
Stand still
I'm right where I wanna be
Holding you in the middle of the moment
Of my life
The way I feel
I don't care what's in front of me
Or what's behind me I just wanna
Stop the wheel
And stand still
Stand still
I'm right where I wanna be
Holding you in the middle of the moment
Of my life
The way I feel
I don't care what's in front of me
Or what's behind me I just wanna
Stop the wheel
And stand still
Oh baby, I just wanna stop the wheel
And stand still
Stand still
The song "Stand Still" by Phil Vassar is an emotional ballad about being present in the moment and cherishing what is right in front of us. In the first verse, the singer reflects on how they used to constantly anticipate what was to come, but now wishes they could slow down time and just savor the present moment. The longing to "stand still" in time is also expressed in the chorus, which emphasizes the importance of being present and fully engaged with the people and experiences that matter most in life.
The second verse builds on this theme, as the singer reflects on missed opportunities and taking things for granted. They emphasize that the moment they are in, with their loved one, is their "finest hour" and the one that they don't want to miss. The final repetition of the chorus reinforces the idea that the moment they are in with their loved one is all that matters, and they just want to stay there and savor it.
Overall, the song celebrates the significance of living in the present moment and valuing what we have right now, rather than constantly looking ahead or dwelling on the past. Through its simple yet heartfelt lyrics, "Stand Still" encourages us to slow down, appreciate our blessings, and cherish the moments that make life worth living.
