They then landed opening slots on shows for Broken Social Scene, DFA 1979, and Hot Hot Heat, and received the honor of Best Unsigned Band at the 2002 North by Northeast music conference (Canada's version of SXSW in the U.S.). Soon after, Pilate inked a deal with indie MapleMusic Recordings, which then released their full-length debut, Caught by the Window, in 2003. The album produced two hits on national radio and MuchMusic, as the guys toured North America, Australia, and Japan. Their follow-up, Sell Control for Life's Speed, appeared back at home in mid-2006, after which the band changed its name to Pilot Speed. The quartet had signed with Wind-Up earlier that same year following the completion of its third album overall (and first as Pilot Speed), Into the West; the label released the record that September.

And all my memories follow you there
Where love took shape
And love woke shame
Now I'm left to take the blame
From rushin' in
From closin' up
What we've built up
You were never wrong
All the same
My way was so hard to change
So hard to change
So hard to change
This woolen blanket
This seaside view
And The war we waged on
Ocean chill
As we slipped away
The grey stood still
Held captive upon this hill
And the lies he told
The result of fame
Where all your actions
Belie your name
When the rising sun
Won't break my fall
You'll still be the one I call
The one I call
The one I call
Pilate's song "Into The West" is a hauntingly beautiful tune that tells a story of a love that was lost and the regret that comes with it. When the singer's lover crosses a bridge into the west, they are taking all of the singer's memories with them. These are memories of a time when their love took shape, but also when shame was awakened. The lyrics suggest that the singer may be feeling guilty for how their relationship ended, perhaps from rushing into things or not being able to change their ways.
The middle section of the song describes the physical landscape of where the memories were made. A seaside view and a war waged on the ocean represent a time that was both beautiful and tumultuous. As they slipped away, everything around them stood still, seemingly captive upon the hill. The lyrics then bring up the lies that were told and the reputations that were stained by fame.
The song ends with a bittersweet declaration that even though the rising sun may not break the singer's fall, their lost love will still be the one they call. The imagery of the sunrise not being able to save them from their pain is especially poignant, and reinforces the idea that there is no easy fix for a broken heart.
