Running Up That Hill
Placebo (1x01) Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

"If I only could, I'd be running up that hill.
If I only could, I'd be running up that hill."

It doesn't hurt me.
Do you want to feel how it feels?
Do you want to know that it doesn't hurt me?
Do you want to hear about the deal that I'm making?
You, it's you and me.

And if I only could,
I'd make a deal with God,
And I'd get him to swap our places,
Be running up that road,
Be running up that hill,
Be running up that building.
If I only could, oh

You don't want to hurt me,
But see how deep the bullet lies.
Unaware I'm tearing you asunder.
Ooh, there is thunder in our hearts.

Is there so much hate for the ones we love?
Tell me, we both matter, don't we?
You, it's you and me.
It's you and me won't be unhappy.

And if I only could,
I'd make a deal with God,
And I'd get him to swap our places,
Be running up that road,
Be running up that hill,
Be running up that building,
Say, if I only could, oh...

You,
It's you and me,
It's you and me won't be unhappy.

"C'mon, baby, c'mon darling,
Let me steal this moment from you now.
C'mon, angel, c'mon, c'mon, darling,
Let's exchange the experience, oh"

And if I only could,
I'd make a deal with God,
And I'd get him to swap our places,
Be running up that road,
Be running up that hill,
With no problems.

And if I only could,
I'd make a deal with God,
And I'd get him to swap our places,
Be running up that road,
Be running up that hill,
With no problems.

And if I only could,
I'd make a deal with God,
And I'd get him to swap our places,
Be running up that road,
Be running up that hill,
With no problems.

If I only could
Be running up that hill
With no problems

"If I only could, I'd be running up that hill.
If I only could, I'd be running up that hill."

Overall Meaning

"Running Up That Hill" by Kate Bush is a song about the struggles of communication and understanding in relationships. The song is a meditation on the desire to swap places with a lover, to see things from their perspective, and to feel what they feel. The repeated refrain of "If I only could, I'd be running up that hill" hints at the futility of this desire, suggesting that it takes more than effort to bridge the gap between people.

The lyrics suggest a sense of mutual misunderstanding and a longing to connect on a deeper level. The lines "Do you want to feel how it feels? / Do you want to know that it doesn't hurt me?" reveal a desire to share experiences and emotions, while the concept of making a deal with God to exchange places with a lover suggests a willingness to trade one's own perspective for that of another. The song expresses a sense of frustration and a desire to break through the barriers that prevent two people from truly understanding one another.

Overall, "Running Up That Hill" speaks to the universal desire for connection and understanding in human relationships. It acknowledges the challenges that we face in trying to communicate with one another, while also expressing a hopeful optimism that suggests that true connection is possible if we are willing to put in the effort.

I lost my sister to COVID/Cancer a year ago tomorrow. She was a great person, i have a weird condition that means I am in chronic pain 24/7 and can't work so i feel i am a burden to my wife, even though she would never say that, its just how i feel.

However if i could make a deal with God to swap places with my sister and be the one who has been dead for almost a year, i wouldn't because even though my life is a bit rubbish i wouldn't be without my wife or our dogs.

If anyone is out there thinking the world would be a better place without them in it, it wouldn't be, you are not alone, speak to friends, family or healthcare professionals.

Stay safe and take care.

God bless you D, gone but never forgotten.

Surprisingly I heard Placebo’s cover before Kate’s original, back when I was in high school, maybe 2006 or 2007. Placebo had a big impact on my life, despite everyone I know disliking them. I still listen to placebo when I want to feel something nostalgic and melancholic.

This is my favorite version. Heard it on the O.C. and now I feel sad everytime I hear it, remembering Ryan's pain and how lost he is.
