Medicine
Pleasantries Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Sorry to call you but I wanted to see
What is going down in your world
And hear it in your voice
Not to watch it on tiny screens anymore

To hear you speak, and sing again
Is medicine please don't you take it away
When you hung up the phone
It's hung around my throat
Don't let me hear a dial tone

Da, da, da da, da, da
Da, da, da, da, dah dah da, da, da
Da, da, da stay

Sorry to call you
You got a new number, so did I
That's so ironic or is it a coincidence? I
Always get those twisted

To hear you speak, and sing again
Is medicine please don't you take it away
When you hung up the phone
It's hung around my throat
Don't let me hear a dial tone

Da, da, da da, da, da
Da, da, da, da, dah dah da, da, da
Da, da, da

To hear you speak, and sing again
Is medicinе please don't you take it away
Whеn you hung up the phone
It's hung around my throat
Don't let me hear a dial tone

Da, da, da da, da, da

Da, da, da, da, dah dah da, da, da
Da, da, da

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Pleasantries's song "Medicine" convey a strong sense of longing and connection through communication. The singer expresses a desire to hear the voice of the person they're calling, to have a genuine conversation rather than relying on impersonal digital communication through screens. They refer to this experience as "medicine," highlighting its importance and soothing effect. The singer pleads with the person on the other end of the line not to hang up and let them hear the empty dial tone, as that would leave them feeling hollow and incomplete.

The lyrics also touch upon the irony or coincidence of both the singer and the person they're calling having new numbers. This further emphasizes the desire for a connection that transcends the superficial changes of contact information. It suggests that true connection goes beyond numbers and technologies, highlighting the need for genuine human interaction and emotional intimacy.

Overall, the lyrics of "Medicine" express a yearning for meaningful communication and the healing power it brings. The song reminds us of the importance of personal connection in a digital age and the emotional impact it can have on our well-being.

None of Your Business

I love how without the video this is just a wholesome song about wanting to be able to talk to your friends and the importance of contacting eachother… and with the video it’s about a fucked up stalker

Dr. G&W

I mean the number change line is pretty sus

Jemimacakes

I think that might just be your interpretation. The lyrics definitely sound abusive and fucked up to me.

Lazy Animating

@Jemimacakes I agree. Like, “when you hang up the phone, it’s hung around my throat”? The lyrics are just as fucked up as the animation and its brilliant

Strawberry Scented Chloroform

@Lazy Animating you'd be surprised of how many dark metaphors are used in love songs

Puppaduppy

This was a wonderful watch, and also a bit of a mood ruined given the subject of stalking, and how the stalker will only view reaching out as positive.

I love the deeper meaning of the music video, how the stalker only sees his interactions with this woman as positive. He doesn’t see separation as a sign that he should stop but only as encouragement for him to find news ways to contact her. Seeing these deliberate attempts to get rid of him as ironic or coincidence. It really offers a unique perspective. Amazing work I love your art so much!!

Thelastwaddle dee

Alright who’s gonna be the one to tell him about just about any other song about stalkers or stalkers in general

Crimson

Willow.
