How You Live
Point Of Grace Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Wake up to the sunlight
With your windows open
Don't hold in your anger or leave things unspoken
Wear your red dress
Use your good dishes
Make a big mess and make lots of wishes
Have what you want
But want what you have
And don't spend your life lookin' back

[Chorus]
Turn up the music
Turn it up loud
Take a few chances
Let it all out
You won't regret it
Lookin' back from where you have been
Cause it's not who you knew
And it's not what you did
It's how you live

So go to the ballgames
And go to the ballet
And go see your folks more than just on the holidays
Kiss all your children
Dance with your wife
Tell your husband you love him every night
Don't run from the truth
Cause you can't get away
Just face it and you'll be okay

[Chorus]

Oh wherever you are and wherever you've been
Now is the time to begin

So give to the needy
And pray for the grieving
E'en when you don't think that you can
Cause all that you do is bound to come back to you
So think of your fellow man
Make peace with God and make peace with yourself
Cause in the end there's nobody else

[Chorus]

Cause it's not who you knew

And it's not what you did
It's how you live

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Point Of Grace's song "How You Live" implore the listener to live life to the fullest, not holding back in expressing their emotions, taking risks and cherishing what they already have. The song's title refers to the idea that it doesn't matter who you know or what you have accomplished in life, rather it is the way in which you live your life that truly matters. The opening lines about waking up to the sunlight and opening your windows create a sense of positivity and encourage the listener to embrace the day with an open and optimistic attitude. The chorus urges the listener to turn up the music and take chances, with the reassurance that they won't regret it when they look back on their life. The lyrics then move on to discuss the importance of family and relationships, encouraging the listener to cherish the moments they have with loved ones and to not take them for granted. The song ends with a call to live a life of compassion and kindness, to give to those in need, and to make peace with oneself and with God.

This song always makes tears stream down my cheeks. I can remember my many times admitted in the hospital not wanting to live and just not appreciating the Lord and all the blessings he has given me. The last time I was hospitalized nearly ten years ago, on the way home I heard this song. It totally changed my life!!!! Thank you for always reminding me that you are always with me.

I'm not a religious person in any way. I went to church as a young kid but don't remember any of it. I love this song! One of my favorites from PoG. My father passed away almost 7 months ago and I wish I could've spent more time with him. 😥 I've done bad things and known some bad people. But it doesn't make me a bad person despite what I've been told. This song really brought a new point of view to my life. So thank you ladies for this beautiful song!

Hi Tired Momma,
I'm sorry about the loss of your dad. You must miss him. I'm praying for your comfort and peace.
And the good news is that it doesn't matter what you've been told (about being bad). God loves you and sent his son, Jesus Christ, to die for you. It's your choice to believe :)
Merry Christmas!
