The first verse seems to be a mother talking about her child, or at least a child she cares for deeply. She considers the child hers, even though biologically it is not hers. She talks about holding the child for only “a little while,” but giving her “all my life”. The child is eventually going to be taken away, but the mother is going to give all that she can until then. The phrase “until she’s swooped up by the sea of love” can be interpreted in different ways - either as until the child finds their own love or support system that replaces the mother’s, or even death. Her attachment to the child is strong but the inevitability of separation is greater.
The chorus of the song continues with the theme of the “dark star,” which seems to be a metaphor for something that is always elusive, always difficult to attain or reach, casting a shadow on the other parts of life.
