Born and raised in Minneapolis, Prince signed a record deal with Warner Bros. Records at the age of 19, soon releasing the albums For You (1978) and Prince (1979). He went on to achieve critical success with the influential albums Dirty Mind (1980), Controversy (1981), and 1999 (1982). His sixth album, Purple Rain (1984), was recorded with his new backing band the Revolution, and was also the soundtrack to the film of the same name in which he starred. Purple Rain garnered continued success for Prince and was a major commercial achievement, spending six consecutive months atop the Billboard 200 chart. The soundtrack also won Prince the Academy Award for Best Original Song Score. After disbanding the Revolution, Prince released the album Sign o' the Times (1987), widely hailed by critics as the greatest work of his career. In the midst of a contractual dispute with Warner Bros. in 1993, he changed his stage name to the unpronounceable symbol logo. Hollow circle above downward arrow crossed with a curlicued horn-shaped symbol and then a short bar (known to fans as the "Love Symbol") and was often referred to as The Artist Formerly Known as Prince (or TAFKAP) or simply The Artist.
After signing with Arista Records in 1998, Prince reverted to his original name in 2000. Over the next decade, six of his albums entered the U.S. top 10 charts. In April 2016, at the age of 57, Prince died after accidentally overdosing on fentanyl at his Paisley Park home and recording studio in Chanhassen, Minnesota. He was a prolific musician who released 39 albums during his life, with a vast array of unreleased material left in a custom-built bank vault underneath his home after his death, including fully completed albums and over 50 finished music videos. He also released songs under multiple pseudonyms during his life, as well as writing songs that were made popular after being covered by other musicians, most notably "Nothing Compares 2 U" by Sinéad O'Connor and "Manic Monday" by the Bangles. Estimates of the complete number of songs written by Prince range anywhere from 500 to well over 1,000. Released posthumously, his demo albums Piano and a Microphone 1983 (2018) and Originals (2019) both received critical acclaim.
Prince sold over 100 million records worldwide, ranking him among the best-selling music artists of all time. His awards included the Grammy President's Merit Award, the American Music Awards for Achievement and of Merit, the Billboard Icon Award, an Academy Award, and a Golden Globe Award. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2004, the UK Music Hall of Fame in 2006, and the Rhythm and Blues Music Hall of Fame in 2016, and was inducted twice into the Black Music & Entertainment Walk of Fame in 2022.

Silent Ft Prince-I'm Missing You
Prince Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I was born with two hearts
But I've never been so talented
as to show you how I feel
When in front of your eyes
I was born a man
I was born a man
as To hide the way I feel
Right in front of your eyes
of your Eyes
I know It's gonna take some time to heal
The wounds that life has caused me
But nothing's gonna change the way I feel
About the ones that I love
I'm saying it right to your face
For I'll never go back to the rear side
Or
Hide again in oblivion…
I was born with two hearts
I was born with two hearts
But I've never been so talented
as To tell you about my love
right in front of your eyes
I was born a man
I was born a man
But I've never been so talented Never been so talented
as To tell you about my love
right in front of your eyes
It's time to show
The world how strong I've grown in recent years
Ain't nothing gonna hold my voice again
Cause I need to shout out loud
You know I'm singing it right to your face!
Cause I'll never go back to the rear side
Or
Hide again in oblivion
I was born with two hearts
I was born with two hearts
But I've never been so talented
as To tell you about my love
right in front of your eyes
In these deeply introspective and emotionally charged lyrics from Prince's song "Silent," the artist reflects on his inner struggles and personal growth through the metaphor of being born with two hearts. This symbolism can be interpreted as representing the complexity and depth of his emotions, suggesting a duality within himself that he is still coming to terms with. Despite possessing this profound emotional capacity, he acknowledges a limitation in his ability to effectively communicate his feelings to others.
The repetition of the lines "I was born a man / But I've never been so talented" underscores Prince's inner conflict between his outward appearance and the depth of his emotions. This juxtaposition highlights his struggle to reconcile his masculinity with his vulnerability, showcasing a raw honesty in expressing his innermost thoughts and feelings. By admitting his shortcomings in conveying his emotions, he showcases a sense of humility and self-awareness.
The theme of healing and acceptance permeates the lyrics as Prince acknowledges the wounds inflicted by life's challenges and experiences. He emphasizes the importance of time and patience in the healing process, recognizing that these scars may never fully fade. Despite this, he remains steadfast in his love for those dear to him, boldly proclaiming his affection and devotion without reservation or fear of vulnerability.
The lyrics culminate in a declaration of self-empowerment and authenticity, as Prince affirms his determination to no longer suppress his true emotions or hide behind a façade of stoicism. Through a newfound sense of strength and resilience, he vows to assert himself and speak his truth unapologetically, refusing to retreat into the shadows of self-doubt or insecurity. By revealing his love openly and unabashedly, Prince demonstrates a profound sense of courage and authenticity in embracing his true self and breaking free from the constraints that once held him back.

I was born with two hearts
I have deep emotions and feelings within me
I was born a man
I am a grown adult with maturity and experiences
But I've never been so talented
I have not been skillful or confident enough
as to show you how I feel
to express my emotions to you openly
When in front of your eyes
while you are present and watching
I know It's gonna take some time to heal
I understand that it will take time to recover
The wounds that life has caused me
from the pain and difficulties life has brought me
But nothing's gonna change the way I feel
my emotions and love for you will remain unchanged
About the ones that I love
towards those who are dear to my heart
I'm saying it right to your face
I am openly expressing my feelings to you
For I'll never go back to the rear side
I will not retreat or hide my emotions again
Or hide again in oblivion
or conceal my love and feelings from you
It's time to show
it is now the moment to demonstrate
The world how strong I've grown in recent years
the strength and growth I have achieved
Ain't nothing gonna hold my voice again
nothing will silence me any longer
Cause I need to shout out loud
I must proclaim my feelings loudly
You know I'm singing it right to your face!
I am expressing my emotions directly to you
Cause I'll never go back to the rear side
I will not revert to hiding my feelings
Or hide again in oblivion
or conceal my love and emotions once more
