The Bird
Prince & The Time Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴
Little blue bird fly
Back to California
Where the sun shines on ya
Butterflies on your trail behind
Rivers glitter from the mountainside
And that's where you belong
Sing, sing your song
It's time to fly away
The ticking of the clock has a way of fading
It's only miles
But I'm just saying
I'm gonna miss you
I'm gonna miss you, girl
And it's okay if we break down from time to time
When a piece of your heart has been left behind
And if I said I didn't love you, then I'd be lying
But that's where you belong
Sing, sing your song
Little blue bird
It's time to fly away
Blue bird fly away
Little blue bird fly
Back to California
Where the sun shines on ya
That's where you belong
That's where you belong, my love
Now fly away, now fly, fly
The lyrics of "The Bird" by Prince & The Time evoke a sense of longing and nostalgia as they address a blue bird flying away back to California. The imagery of the sun shining, butterflies trailing behind, and rivers glittering from the mountainside creates a serene and idyllic setting that represents a place of happiness and warmth. The repetition of "Back to California" emphasizes the idea of returning to a place that feels like home and where one truly belongs.
The mention of the ticking clock fading and the acknowledgment of missing someone suggest a sense of separation and a bittersweet goodbye. The lyrics convey a message of acceptance of distance and the inevitability of parting ways, while also expressing the pain of leaving a loved one behind. The line "When a piece of your heart has been left behind" speaks to the emotional toll of leaving a piece of oneself with someone else.
The confession of love in the lyrics, "And if I said I didn't love you, then I'd be lying," adds a layer of emotional depth to the song. It acknowledges the strength of the bond between the singer and the person they are bidding farewell to, highlighting the significance of their relationship. Despite the sadness of parting ways, there is a sense of understanding that this separation is necessary for the blue bird to find its true home and purpose.
The repeated refrain "That's where you belong, sing your song, little blue bird, it's time to fly away" serves as a comforting send-off, encouraging the blue bird to embrace its journey and to continue singing its song wherever it goes. The overall message of the song conveys a mix of sadness, love, and acceptance of change, ultimately celebrating the idea of finding one's place in the world and the beauty of spreading one's wings to fly towards new horizons.

I really think that the Time helped to make this movie the big hit that it really was and still is. Morris, Jesse Johnson and the rest of the crew were undoubtedly one of the best groups out at that time. Absolutely 👍
