The lyrics of "Extinction" by Pulling Teeth may be interpreted as a contemplation of the uncertain and bleak future facing mankind. The first lines elicit a sense of surprise at the yet-unknown turn of events, but nonetheless, a decision is made to accept it. Plans have to shift, but it seems to produce a positive change in the mindset. However, it is not an easy choice when the place they live in revolves around human misery. It is almost as if the industry is driving humanity towards its downfall, but nobody seems to acknowledge it.
The following lines indicate the challenges of living in a world in crisis where the sense of impending doom is prevalent. Living on the edge of the apocalypse without any support is a daunting task. Searching for a place to belong or call home is an added burden. However, raising a child in such a world is an entirely different ordeal. The innate selfishness and moral depravity possessed by many in society make it harder to find meaning and purpose in life. The last line "extinct" could be interpreted in two ways, either humankind is nearing extinction because of its actions, or it is better to allow humanity to go extinct than to continue on the destructive path.
