Flash
Queen/Vanguard Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

"Klytus, I'm bored. What play-thing can you offer me today?"
"An obscure body in the S-K System, your majesty. The inhabitants refer to it as the planet Earth"
"How peaceful it looks"

"Hahahahaha, hahahahaha"
"Hahahaha, most effective your majesty. Will you destroy this... Earth?"
"Later, I like to play with things a while... before annihilation"
"Hahahahaha"

Flash! Ah-ah
Savior of the universe

Flash! Ah-ah
He'll save every one of us

(Hahahahaha)

Flash! Ah-ah
He's a miracle

Flash! Ah-ah
King of the impossible

He's for every one of us
Stand for every one of us
He saves with a mighty hand
Every man, every woman
Every child, it's the mighty Flash

Flash! Ah-ah

Flash! Ah-ah
He'll save every one of us

Just a man with a man's courage
You know he's nothing but a man
And he can never fail
No one but the pure at heart
May find the Golden Grail
Oh-oh, oh-oh

Flash!

"My God, we're moving!"
"For God's sake, strap yourselves down"

Overall Meaning

The song "Flash" by Queen/Vanguard was written as the theme song for the 1980 film Flash Gordon. The lyrics open with a conversation between Emperor Ming and his servant Klytus, in which Ming expresses his boredom and desire for something new to play with. Klytus suggests Earth, which Ming finds peaceful-looking but decides to destroy eventually. The chorus then introduces the hero of the story, Flash Gordon, as the savior of the entire universe. The lyrics go on to describe Flash as a courageous man who can never fail and is the King of the impossible. The song ends with a dialogue between two characters in the movie, as they experience the thrill of spaceship travel.

The opening conversation in the song establishes the narrative of the movie, where Ming is the villain and Flash is the hero who must save the world from his destruction. The lyrics of the chorus position Flash as a savior figure who is powerful enough to save not just Earth but the entire universe. The repetition of the phrase "Flash, ah-ah" creates a sense of urgency and excitement, making it a catchy and memorable tune. The lyrics also make reference to the Golden Grail, which is a metaphor for the challenges that Flash must overcome to save the world.

We used to have this on the jukebox in the pub about 20 years ago, and my friend and I would put it on. Everybody else would get really excited that we'd stuck some Queen on, then the beat would kick in and they'd be furious. My friend and I loved it though.
