Talkin' Bout
R. Berry Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Tell me what can I do? I sit here wondering if the things you say are true
But, oh, so many times, I believed in something that just melted into lies
But, oh, is it just a dream or is it so
You're pretending not to see, you're pretending not to see

I'm talking 'bout you, I'm talking 'bout me
And everything that we could do, and everything that we could be
Tell me why you don't show
When I look into your eyes the both of us should know
But I, I just don't know, am I right in holding on or should I just let go?
But, oh, is it just a dream, or is it so, oh, you're pretending not to see

I'm talking 'bout you, yeah, I'm talking 'bout me
And everything that we could do
And everything that we could be, yeah, I'm talking 'bout

Oh, I'm talking 'bout you, oh, I'm talking 'bout me
And everything that we could do, and everything that we could be, yeah

I'm talking 'bout you, oh, I'm talking 'bout me
And everything that we could do, and everything that we could be, yeah

Overall Meaning

In the song "Talkin' Bout," R. Berry expresses his confusion and uncertainty about a relationship, questioning whether the things his partner says are true or not. He reflects on past instances where he believed in something, only to have it turn out to be lies. Despite this, he still holds on and wonders if what he and his partner could have together is just a dream. He wonders if he should let go or continue to hold on, even though his partner pretends not to see the problems in their relationship.

The lyrics suggest a struggle with trust and communication within the relationship. The repeated line "you're pretending not to see" implies that his partner is avoiding the issues rather than facing them head-on. The repetition of "I'm talking 'bout you, I'm talking 'bout me" highlights the importance of both partners owning up to their individual contributions to their problems and working together to find a solution.

The song's slow tempo and melancholic melody emphasize the emotional weight of the lyrics. The use of repetition in the chorus and verse helps to reinforce the theme of uncertainty and confusion in the relationship.

Even though 3 was very short lived, i thought this band absolutely rocked, from Emerson's soulful keyboards to Palmer's powerful drumming to Berry's smooth singing voice, these guys were musically the perferct combination of AOR and prog while maintaining the spirit of ELP but still sounding original.

I definitely miss when MTV played music! This a great album

3 ,
como
ELPowell,
debieron haber hecho
un segundo álbum .

En EMERSON BERRY AND PALMER,
hubo tracks impresionantes como este poderoso Video .
Y la totalmente progresiva ,
Desde la vida !

Probably the first time a clean quality transfer of this music video. Very nice.

Those late 80s were odd for ELP...they couldn't all get as one until the 90s...this was a good pop rock lp...must of been fun to leave Prog behind for a second

Errol Cuthbert

Best version of the vid I've seen.

Emerson using his MIDI Grand Piano, Yamaha DX1, Yamaha DX5, Emu Emulator 3...

Too Pop! To top the real ELP. That was the fall of giants of progressive Rock! Lik ELP. Marillion, fate warning and even Rush was making better prog rock tunes! The song is not terrible, but it is not great. No wonder it stood in obscurity. 😢

Happy BD Berry

The gated reverb on that snare sounds so mean!
