drive
R. Ocasek Lyrics

Smack, crack, bushwhacked
Tie another one to the racks, baby
Hey kids, rock and roll
Nobody tells you where to go, baby

What if I ride, what if you walk?
What if you rock around the clock?
Tick-tock, tick-tock
What if you did, what if you walk?
What if you tried to get off, baby?
Oh-oh

Hey, kids, where are you?
Nobody tells you what to do, baby
Oh-oh
Hey kids, shake a leg
Maybe you're crazy in the head, baby
Oh-oh

Maybe you did, maybe you walked
Maybe you rocked around the clock
Tick-tock, tick-tock
Maybe I ride, maybe you walk
Maybe I drive to get off, baby
Oh-oh

Hey kids, shake a leg
Maybe you're crazy in the head, baby
Ollie, Ollie, Ollie, Ollie, Ollie
Ollie, Ollie in come free, baby
Hey, kids, where are you?
Nobody tells you what to do, baby

Smack, crack, shack-a-lack
Tie another one to your backs, baby
Oh-oh
Hey kids, rock and roll
Nobody tells you where to go, baby

Maybe you did, maybe you walk
Maybe you rock around the clock
Tick-tock, tick-tock
Maybe I ride, maybe you walk
Maybe I drive to get off, baby

Hey kids, where are you?
Nobody tells you what to do, baby
Hey kids, rock and roll
Nobody tells you where to go, baby

Go, baby
Baby

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of R. Ocasek’s song Drive are open to interpretation and can mean different things to different people. The song seems to be an encouragement for people to be free and make their own choices. The first few lines of the song; “Smack, crack, bushwhacked, Tie another one to the racks, baby” have a high likelihood of referring to drug abuse and its effects. The following line “Hey kids, rock and roll, Nobody tells you where to go, baby” encourages people not to be pushed around or forced by others to do things they don’t want to do.

The chorus begins with “What if I ride, what if you walk? What if you rock around the clock?” These lines could mean that people should be able to do what they want, whether it’s something fast-paced or slow, as long as it’s what they truly desire. The ticking sound throughout the chorus could indicate that time is passing by and people should not waste it. The line “Hey, kids, where are you? Nobody tells you what to do, baby” could be seen to as an invitation to enjoy one’s life without worrying about other people's opinions.

Towards the end of the song, the lyrics change slightly, and the lines “Maybe you did, maybe you walked, Maybe you rocked around the clock, Tick-tock, tick-tock, Maybe I ride, maybe you walk, Maybe I drive to get off, baby” show that the singer is proposing different options for the listener. The audience can choose to walk, ride, or drive as long as they are happy and free.
