I'm Only Sleeping
R. Steevie Moore Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

When I wake up early in the morning
Lift my head, I'm still yawning
When I'm in the middle of a dream
Stay in bed, float up stream (Float up stream)

Please, don't wake me, no, don't shake me
Leave me where I am, I'm only sleeping
Everybody seems to think I'm lazy
I don't mind, I think they're crazy
Running everywhere at such a speed
Till they find there's no need (There's no need)

Please, don't spoil my day, I'm miles away
And after all I'm only sleeping

Keeping an eye on the world going by my window
Taking my time

Lying there and staring at the ceiling
Waiting for a sleepy feeling...

Please, don't spoil my day, I'm miles away
And after all I'm only sleeping

Ooh yeah

Keeping an eye on the world going by my window
Taking my time

When I wake up early in the morning
Lift my head, I'm still yawning
When I'm in the middle of a dream
Stay in bed, float up stream (Float up stream)

Please, don't wake me, no, don't shake me
Leave me where I am, I'm only sleeping

Overall Meaning

In R. Steevie Moore's "I'm Only Sleeping," the singer begins by describing their reluctance to leave their dream state and wake up in the morning. They want to stay in bed and "float upstream" in their dreams. They ask whoever may try to wake them up not to do so, since they are simply "sleeping."

The singer then discusses the perception of others that they are lazy, but they don't mind. They view the excessive busyness of others as unnecessary and prefer to take their time. They want to be left alone to enjoy their peaceful state and watch the world pass by outside their window.

The song is a commentary on the societal pressure to be constantly productive and busy, and a rejection of this pressure in favor of rest and relaxation. It encourages listeners to embrace their own natural tendencies toward relaxation and not let others make them feel lazy or unproductive.

This man made a 60’s song sound like it’s from the 90s in the 80s.

Happily, I have this one already, though I was always gutted you opted for lead guitar over singing.

@joealanouf

yeah the Beatles album is really cool R>. I was watching a intrview with you. from years ago. working with you would be very cool. but i know what you mean. every reason why it would be imposibal. I do what you do. make my own music and sell it. people really love DIY. there are pople who listen to music in there cars and at work. though are the chart hits. and there are people who like to really listen to there music. like when I put a Rod Mckuen poetry album. thats just me and that. no one elce.
