Those Were The Days
R / Dido Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

We were kids we'd know it all
We will live we will love forever more

We were blind so we were free
We had no care just doubts

We were young love as a weapon days so sharp
It's never enough, never enough
It's never enough, never enough
It's never enough, never enough
It's never enough, never enough

We were kids we were friends
We were young we were kids
We were friends we were young

Those were the days those were the days
Those were the days those were the days

Those were the days those were the days
Those were the days those were the days

Those were the days those were the days
Those were the days those were the days

Overall Meaning

The song "Those Were The Days" by R/Dido reflects on the nostalgia and innocence of youth. The first verse sets the tone by describing a time when the singer and their friends were young and believed they knew everything. They had a sense of immortality, thinking they would live and love forever.

The second verse acknowledges the naivety of their youth, emphasizing that their blindness was actually liberating. They had no worries or concerns, only doubts about what the future held. This highlights the carefree nature of their youthful days.

The chorus repeats the phrase "It's never enough," suggesting a feeling of longing or dissatisfaction. This repetition implies that despite the happiness and freedom they experienced in their youth, it was not sufficient. There is a sense that they yearn for the simplicity and purity of that time, as if it can never be fully recaptured.

The final two verses reiterate the connection between the singer and their friends, emphasizing the bond they shared as they grew up together. This repetition emphasizes the importance and significance of those formative years, invoking a sense of fond reminiscence.

Overall, "Those Were The Days" captures the bittersweet nostalgia for the carefree and innocent days of youth. The song juxtaposes the freedom and joy of that time with a longing for its return, ultimately resonating with listeners who can relate to the fleeting nature of innocence and the passage of time.

This music video is feeling, words, meaning, images, context and music; all distilled and combined in its purest form to move something. Emotions.

As a teenager in 2007, I took a school trip to Barcelona. Very much walked streets like these. I was positively obsessed with Faithless back then, I had their music on repeat on my PSP. Just a few months ago, I came across an old photo on Facebook from that Barcelona trip, which I nostalgically shared with the comment, "those were the days". Yesterday, I first heard this song. I read the title and heard the song, and was instantly reminded of that trip. And that comment I made. Today, I see this video. Barcelona. What the fudge. Has my mental picture manifested itself, or do I need to take my pills again?
