Racey scored a series of hit singles in the United Kingdom, Australia, and New Zealand. These include "Lay Your Love on Me" and "Some Girls". Their aforementioned 'Smash and Grab' album sold about 500,000 copies worldwide. The band's best songs were written and produced by Mike Chapman and Nicky Chinn, the same famous partnership behind other great artists such as rock legends Sweet.
A Chinn-Chapman song for Racey, "Kitty", was notably reworked and released by Toni Basil as "Mickey" in 1981; it reached Number one on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and Number 2 in the UK Singles Chart in early 1982.
Racey's first single, "Baby It's You", was penned by Smokie members Chris Norman and Pete Spencer. Their second single, "Lay Your Love on Me", was the group's first hit single, peaking at No.3 in late 1978/early 1979. The third single, "Some Girls", was written for Blondie, for whom Mike Chapman also produced, but was instead given to Racey as a follow-up to "Lay Your Love on Me".
Racey parted company with Chinn and Chapman after Smash And Grab, and the band split in 1985. Since then two separate groups named Racey exist, one featuring Richard Gower, and the other originally featuring Clive Wilson, Phil Fursdon and Pete Miller, the original bass player of Racey. Miller died of cancer on 6 May 2003.

Baby It's You
Racey Lyrics

Seemed so long I really needed a friend
Why should I pretend?
And who do you think I had to see
If Southern Comfort comforts me
I could be free but where would I be
Then we came along and you sang your song
And you made my day in your special way
And I knew
Yes I knew
Baby it′s you
Baby it's you
You know
That it′s you
I'm thinking of
Baby it's you
I tried my best to get along
Make some friends
But something always went wrong
I come on too strong
Things were really getting rough
Getting tired of acting like I was tough
I′ve just had enough
Then you came along
And you sang your song
And you made my day
In your special way
And I knew
Yes I knew
Baby it′s you
Yes I knew
Baby it's you
Baby it′s you
You know
That it's you
I′m thinking of
Baby it's you
Then you came along
And you sang your song
And you made my day
In your special way
And I knew
Yes I knew
Baby it′s you
Yes I knew
Baby it's you
Baby it's you
You know
That it′s you
I′m thinking of
Baby it's you.
The lyrics to "Baby It's You" by Racey seem to be about the singer feeling lost and needing a friend. They've been putting on a tough facade, but it hasn't worked out for them. They are searching for something, and Southern Comfort alcohol is their temporary source of comfort. However, they meet someone who sings a song that makes them feel better in a special way. This person becomes the friend that they needed, and the singer realizes that it's actually this person who they have been thinking of all along.
It's interesting to note that the song was written by a British songwriting duo, Nicky Chinn and Mike Chapman, who were responsible for writing many hits during the 1970s. The song was released in 1979 and became a hit in many countries, including the UK and Australia. The verses have a slightly melancholy feel to them, but the chorus is upbeat and catchy, making it a perfect pop song.
