Lala
Rachel & the Kings Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I looked in the mirror today
And I'm like that brotha he too raw
They telling me Nik you be smooth wit it
Like Michael Jackson when he moon walk
They try to compare me to other rappers
They only go up when I snooze off
Heard the men still ducking the one time
They never telling what they heard or saw
I hate when they try to be down wit the hood when you ain't from it and you never need it
Instead of getting out they getting in
How you trynna be real when you fitting in
It took me some time but I'm saving and stacking
I took some Ls but they on the chin
My skin thicker now my rhymes slicker
You can say I'm harder than I ever been
I'm one of a kind got me feeling like Wemby
You text here and there but is you really wit me
No run dmc but it really get tricky
Situations got sticky
Run down the alley like Ricky
Popped his bubble he wit Mickey
Dat ain't blatt you got a blicky
Gotta wait yo turn ain't no raising yo hand saying pick me
Hadda cut shawdy off her mind was itty bitty
We just on two different timelines
Like KD getting a pass from Josh Giddey
Devin Booker from the middy
At the party wit the drinks in her say she tipsy
I can put on for my city
No stepping on toes my crew we do it by committee
And essentially
I'm just on different timing then them all
They passed me the rock and now I gotta ball
My man said he was outnumbered and shot like savage at the mall
They looking at me and waiting till I fall
She give me her number I ain't tryn call
I step on the beat I'm cranking out wit tall
They don't care bout the good just pointing out the flaws
(Ouu la la la)
I keep it real
Shoot like a wizard call me Bradley Beal
She do what she want when my hands on the wheel
We got a problem tell me how you feel
I always shake hands when I finish a deal

Money on hand so we ain't gotta steal
Food on the beat you know Nik gon finish his meal

Overall Meaning

In the first stanza, the artist reflects on his own image and compares himself to someone who is raw and authentic. He mentions being compared to other rappers, but suggests that he is different because he does not sleep on his success. He criticizes those who try to fit in with a certain culture or community without genuinely being a part of it. He emphasizes the importance of being true to oneself and not conforming to fit in.

The second stanza highlights the artist's growth and resilience. He talks about saving money and taking losses, but not letting them bring him down. His experiences have made him stronger and his lyrics have become more skillful. He mentions feeling unique and having mixed feelings about someone's loyalty. The situation becomes complicated and sticky, just like in the alley scene from the movie "Boyz n the Hood." The artist implies that some people are not as tough or genuine as they claim to be.

In the third stanza, the artist continues to express his individuality and independence. He mentions being on a different path or timeline than others, using the analogy of basketball players Kevin Durant and Josh Giddey. He highlights the discrepancy between two people's levels of intoxication at a party and asserts his ability to represent his city without stepping on anyone's toes. He stresses that his crew operates as a collective and makes decisions together.

Lastly, the artist emphasizes his authenticity and integrity. He raps about being real and compares his shooting skills to a wizard, specifically referencing NBA player Bradley Beal. He mentions a woman doing as she pleases when he is in control and solving problems by discussing one's feelings. He concludes by mentioning his commitment to shaking hands after completing a deal and having enough money to avoid resorting to theft. The line "Food on the beat you know Nik gon finish his meal" signifies his dedication to fully utilizing his opportunity in the music industry.

So rare to find an excellent drummer who will say I can do this on just a tambourine. AND a supreme jazz trumpet player say, sure, I can play the guitar on this, AND a singer like Rachel who will say I can pull off a guy's song with conviction, AND a bass player, Bridget, who can drive the whole (possible) mess into a great song. Absolutely love it. Four TALENTED musicians.

That bass player is great! everyone is

Chris Hayworth

If you want to hear how Bridget can drive a song with bass listen to their version of Rich Girl. She blows it away.

I just turned 70 and I just stumbled upon this video. Am totally blown away! It is so encouraging and uplifting not only to hear great music from my youth being performed by young people of today but that these same young people give this song such a stunning (? Is that the right adjective?) and certainly fascinatingly subtle presentation. Kudos to the cameraman too whom I believe captured visually everything that was possible to capture visually.

I will be sixty-seven next week 2/10/2022. This song has always made me think. I realize Lola is an enigma. I realize all is not what it seems to be.

Haha I’m happy to hear a 70 yr old is surfing YouTube for music! Awesome!
