Skin
Rae Morris. Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Deep in the core of a broken one
I spy the light of a wounded sun
That keeps you from drowning
Keeps you from drowning

Way beneath the weak surface of it all
I spy a girl only three foot tall
That keeps me from drowning
She keeps me from drowning in it all

With the will to stay
And the will to stand still

We break the rules and listen to our own skin
With a visible scar in a broken sidecar
We break the rules and listen to our own skin
We break our hearts and pretty much everything

After the dark and endless wars
I realize that I'm fighting a cause
That ends with us drowning
Ends with us drowning in it all

With the will to stay
And the will to stand still
We break the rules and listen to our own skin

With a visible scar in a broken sidecar
We break the rules and listen to our own skin
We break our hearts and pretty much everything

With the same old star and the same old sun
Built to keep us both in the same old love
And when the present tense meets the present time
Built to keep our worlds in line

We break the rules and listen to our own skin
We break our hearts and pretty much everything

We break the rules and listen to our own skin
We break our hearts and pretty much everything

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Rae Morris’ song “Skin” suggest a journey of self-discovery where the singer learns to trust and listen to her own intuition. She starts by describing the shattered state that lies at the core of a “broken” individual, but then finds a glimmer of hope in the form of a “wounded sun” that prevents her from giving up. The metaphorical language continues as she highlights how, beneath the surface of everything, there is a small but powerful part of herself that she must heed if she wants to survive - this is symbolized by the image of “a girl only three foot tall.”

As the song progresses, the singer expresses her determination to go against conventional expectations and do what feels right for her. She will no longer play by the “same old rules,” but will allow her “own skin” to guide her. The imagery of scars and brokenness suggests that this process may be painful, but it is necessary in order for her to be true to herself. From the lines “With the same old star and the same old sun / Built to keep us both in the same old love” it seems that Rae sees the world as a place that often tries to keep us limiting ourselves, but through struggle and listening to our own identity we can forge the path we desire.

Overall, Rae Morris’ song “Skin” is a powerful message about the importance of trusting one’s instincts and being true to oneself, even when going against the grain or facing difficulty.

I was fifteen when I first watched this video. I thought to myself "That is one hell of a bittersweet song, such well done." And then I saw Rae and thought "She's one of the prettiest girls I've ever seen. No joke." Now, I'm twenty-one. I was feeling so nostalgic. The shuffle option ended up playing this song, as if it knew I needed to reconect with some memories of mine. Came back here and the experience of listening and watching it didn't change at all. Still love this song and I'll keep cherishing it as one precious memorie of mine. Thank you Rae. ❤
