Grace
Rag'n'Bone Man Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
So easy for you to break my foolish heart
Now I wonder if you ever speak my name
Will I always be defined by my mistakes?
In the eyes of a saint I'm a stranger
We're all trying to find a way
At the death of every darkness there's a morning
We all try
We're all one step from grace
I made myself believe
There was no fight left in me
But redemption doesn't fall down at your feet
In the half light
We raised a hand to my defeat
And I watched the world fall
And I rebuilt it piece by piece
In the eyes of a saint I'm a stranger
We're all trying to find a way
At the death of every darkness there's a morning
Though we all try
We all try
We're all one step from grace
I wonder why we give up on love
When it's always within reach
You and I, we suffered this enough
We all try
We all try
We're all one step from grace
In the eyes of a saint I'm a stranger
We're all trying to find a way
At the death of every darkness there's a morning
Though we all try
We all try
We're all one step from grace
The lyrics to Rag'n'Bone Man's song Grace depict the struggles and complexities of love and redemption. The opening lines refer to the singer telling their loved one that they loved them without hesitation, which ultimately leads to the heartbreak that they experience. They question whether this person ever even speaks their name now, and whether they will always be defined by their mistakes.
The chorus touches on the idea that everyone is trying to find their way, despite often feeling like a stranger in the eyes of others or even oneself. The repeated line "we're all one step from grace" suggests that redemption is always within reach, but it requires effort and perseverance to achieve. The second verse talks about rebuilding oneself in the face of defeat, and highlights the idea that redemption cannot simply be handed to someone.
The final verse touches on the fact that people often give up on love despite it being within reach, and that even if someone has suffered enough, they should still try to find their way back to redemption. The lyrics as a whole showcase a powerful message about the complexities of the human experience and the constant struggle for redemption and self-improvement.

Said I loved you without hesitation
Declared my love with ease and without delay
So easy for you to break my foolish heart
You found it simple to shatter my naive heart
Now I wonder if you ever speak my name
I contemplate if you ever mention me anymore
Will I always be defined by my mistakes?
Will my errors define me forever?
In the eyes of a saint I'm a stranger
To the pure-hearted, I am unknown
We're all trying to find a way
All of us are attempting to discover our path
At the death of every darkness there's a morning
After every dark period, a brighter day awaits
Though we all try
Even though we make an effort
We all try
We are all attempting
We're all one step from grace
We are almost at a state of divine favor and love
I made myself believe
I convinced myself
There was no fight left in me
I supposed I had no energy left in me to keep going
But redemption doesn't fall down at your feet
Redemption cannot be effortless and must be worked for
In the half light
In the dim illumination
We raised a hand to my defeat
I waved goodbye to my loss
And I watched the world fall
I observed the world collapse
And I rebuilt it piece by piece
And then I put it back together, one fragment at a time
I wonder why we give up on love
I am curious why we surrender on love
When it's always within reach
When it is simply accessible
You and I, we suffered this enough
You and I have endured this to the limit
We're all one step from grace
We are almost at a state of divine favor and love
