Paint it Black
Rage Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I see a red door and I want it painted black
No colors anymore I want them to turn black
I see the girls walk by dressed in their summer clothes
I have to turn my head until my darkness goes

I see a line of cars and they're all painted black
With flowers and my love, both never to come back
I see people turn their heads and quickly look away
Like a newborn baby it just happens ev'ryday

I look inside myself and see my heart is black
I see my red door and it has been painted black
Maybe then I'll fade away and not have to face the facts
It's not easy facing up when your whole world is black

No more will my green sea go turn a deeper blue
I could not forsee this thing happening to you
If I look hard enough into the setting sun
My love will laugh with me before the morning comes

I see a red door and I want it painted black
No colors anymore I want them to turn black
I see the girls walk by dressed in their summer clothes
I have to turn my head until my darkness goes

I wanna see it painted black, painted black
Black as night, black as coal

I wanna see the sun, blotted out from the sky
I wanna see it painted, painted, painted, painted black

Overall Meaning

The opening lines of Paint It Black paint a picture of someone who is consumed by a deep sadness and bitterness, so much so that they want everything around them to be as dark and colorless as they feel on the inside. The singer sees a red door, a symbol of life and vibrancy, but instead of being cheered up by its brightness, they want it painted black. They long for a total erasure of color from the world, hoping that it will help them fade away and avoid facing their problems.

The second verse is even more melancholy, describing the singer's grief over losing someone they loved. The cars that pass by are all black, adorned with funeral flowers that signify the finality of death. People around them are unwilling to acknowledge their pain, quick to glance away as though it's too uncomfortable to bear. The singer looks inside themselves and realizes that their heart is also black, hinting at a deep depression that has taken over their entire being.

In the final verse, the singer longs for a different kind of darkness: the darkness of the night sky. They wish for a total blotting out of the sun, as though the absence of light could somehow make their sorrow more bearable. The repeated chorus emphasizes their desire for everything to be painted black, as though that's the only thing that could possibly bring them peace.
