The Revolution
Rage Against The Machine feat. Maynard James Keenan Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

[Maynard:]
Living on the street shores
He didn't learn and wanted children
Said, "What is there left to stay alive for?"
He doesn't wanna see it..

[Maynard:]
He didn't wanna deal with it
Here they come, feelings that come as natural
Whatever left, he considered a loss, y'all
He doesn't wanna see it...

[Maynard:]
Running away, getting some kinda cure
"What is there left to keep him alive?" she said
Give him your love, give him your love to save him
Give him your love, give him your love to save him

[Maynard:]
Give him your love, give him your love to save him
Don't run away, give him your love to save him
Give him your love, give him your love to save him
Give him your love...

[Zack 2x:]
You can kill the revolutionary
But you can't kill the revolution

[Zack & Maynard 2x:]
You can kill the revolutionary
But you can't kill the revolution

[Zack:]
Lies, negative indoctrination of our good selves
Promote feelings of such hopelessness, powerlessness
Suicide or a slower death from addiction
seemed to be the only way to stop the pain

[Maynard:]
Running...

[Zack:]
Lies, negative indoctrination of our good selves
Promote feelings of such hopelessness, powerlessness Suicide or a slower death from addiction
seemed to be the only way to stop the pain

[Zack:]
Suicide seemed to be the only way to stop the pain
Suicide seemed to be the only way to stop the pain

[Zack 2x:]
You can kill the revolutionary
But you can't kill the revolution

[Zack & Maynard 4x:]

You can kill the revolutionary
But you can't kill the revolution

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to this song by Rage Against the Machine explore the idea that oppression and negative indoctrination can push individuals to the brink of despair, and that love and human solidarity can offer a path towards liberation and hope. The first verse tells the story of someone living on the street, who is overwhelmed by the difficulties of life and questions why he should keep trying to survive. The second verse describes his attempt to find a cure and the call for love as a means of salvation. In the third verse, the lyrics repeat the call for love and resist the urge to run away from the struggles of life. The chorus declares that while individuals may be killed, the revolutionary spirit cannot be quelled.

The song is a powerful critique of systems of oppression that can lead people to feel utterly defeated and unable to overcome their trauma. It speaks to the need for empathetic connection as a key tool in combating these systemic forces and liberating people from the cycle of violence and despair. The repeated refrain "you can't kill the revolution" is a call to arms against those who seek to crush dissent and maintain unjust power structures.

Wow, this is exactly the sound that i would expect from a Tool/Rage collab. Tool and Rage should tour together again.

I still think it's a good idea in 2021

No what they need to do brother, is sit down and analyze what was going on in the first three tool albums, and make six or seven albums that are in the same quality range. They need to dig down to their depths of their souls and make it happen this time. Not that the last album was not one of the best rock albums ever made, but tool quality is a whole different story. I really think they should have just allowed some other rock bands to take over those songs in that last album and make us wait longer, they might have to really get in touch with themselves again do some mind exploring whatever it is, one technique is to write 20 songs and you should have one really good song out of that now you got to do that 7 times or 10 times or whatever to make t he album... And then they could just sell the other songs to other rock bands. Make a ton of money, and give us what we want which is something in the vein of anema or lateralus
