I'm Moving On
Ray Charles Lyrics

I warned you baby from time to time
But you just wouldn't listen
Now pay me no mind
So I'm movin' on, I'm rollin' on
You've broken your vow and it's all over now
So I'm movin' on

That big eight-wheeler rollin' down the track
Means your true lovin' daddy ain't comin' back
'Cause I'm movin' on, I'm rollin' on
You were flyin' too high for my little sky
So I'm movin' on

Some day baby when you had you play
Your gonna want your daddy but your daddy will say
Keep on movin', keep rollin' on
I'm through with you too bad you're blue
'Cause I'm movin' on

Mister engineer take the throttle in hand
And take me down to that southern land
Keep movin' on, keep rollin' on
You can ease my mind if you get me there on time
Move on

Mister fireman won't you please listen to me
'Cause I got a pretty woman in Tennessee
Keep movin' on, keep rollin' on
She's fine as can be and she's waitin' on me
Keep movin' on

I'm gonna move, I'm gonna move
I'm gonna move, I'm gonna move
Whoa move, whoa move
Whoa move, whoa gonna move on
Keep on movin' every day every night
And all the time baby

I'm gonna move on, I'm gonna move on
Yea, gonna move I'm gonna move on now
I'm gonna move on I'm gonna move
But you just wouldn't listen or pay me no mind
And now I'm movin' on, I'm rollin' on
I'm through with you, too bad you're blue
But I'm movin' on
Move on baby, move on
I said move on, I said move on
I said move on, I said move on
Well I'm through with you, too bad you're blue

I said move on, I said move on
I said move on, I said move on

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Ray Charles' song "I'm Moving On" are about a man, who having given his partner ample warning, has decided to move on from the relationship because the woman has ceased to listen to his advice. In the first verse, the man declares that his partner ignored his warnings, and he has decided that he will not pay any attention to her anymore. In the second verse, the man uses the analogy of a big eight-wheeler train to show how he is leaving the woman behind. He declares that the train moving on means that he is not coming back, and there is no turning back.

In the third verse, the man warns his partner that, in time, she will come to realize that she should have listened to him, but by then, he will have moved on. In the fourth and fifth verses, the man pleads with the train to take him to the south where he can start a new life free from the shackles of the old. He remarks that the train can ease his mind if it gets him to his destination on time. The song ends with the man declaring that he is moving on, and there is nothing anyone can do to stop him.

My guitar instructor in college played with Ray Charles. He once told me about a time where he had forgotten his pass and security at a venue didn’t believe he was Ray’s guitarist. At the same time he was arguing with security, Ray was being walked past them. So my teacher says “Ask Ray, he’ll tell you who I am” Without thinking, the security guard asks Ray: “have you seen this guy before?” Without missing a beat, Ray says “I haven’t seen that man a day in my life....yeah that’s my guitar player, let him in.” 😂

Asking the blind guy if he’s ever seen somebody before...

That is literally the dictionary definition of “epic fail”.

Almost as bad as the video with the guy trying to shake the hand of the Armless Archer!
