What'd I Say Part I
Ray Charles Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Hey mama, don't you treat me wrong
Come and love your daddy all night long
All right, hey, hey, all right now

See the girl with the diamond ring
She knows how to shake that thing
All right, hey, hey, Mmm, all right now
Ahhh, Ohh, Ahhh, Ohh, Ahhh, Ohh, Ohh
Make me feel so good, make me feel so good right now
Make me feel so good, make me feel so good right now
Make me feel so good, make me feel so good

Mmm, see the girl with the red dress on
She can do the dog all night long
All right, hmm what'd I say, tell me what'd I say

Tell me what'd I say, tell me what'd I say right now
Tell me what'd I say, tell me what'd I say right now
Tell me what'd I say, tell me what'd I say

Ahhh, Ohh, Ahhh, Ohh, Ahhh, Ohh, Ohh
It's all right, It's all right right now
Baby, it's all right, Baby, it's all right right now
Baby, it's all right, Oh yeah!

Baby shake that thing, baby shake that thing right now

Baby shake that thing, baby shake that thing right now
Baby shake that thing, well I feel all right

Overall Meaning

The song "What'd I Say Part I" by Ray Charles is a classic rhythm and blues song released in 1959. In the song, Charles sings about urging his mother to treat him right and love him all night long. He then transitions to mention a girl with a diamond ring who knows how to shake it and a girl in a red dress who can dance the dog all night long. He asks his audience what he said and repeats the question numerous times throughout the song. The lyrics are repetitive and catchy, making it a popular song to this day.

There are multiple interpretations of this song, but one is that Charles is singing about sexual desire and innuendos. He talks about loving his mother all night long, which can be interpreted as a sexual reference. The girls he mentions - one with a diamond ring and another in a red dress - can be seen as sexual objects. Additionally, the dance moves he mentions such as shaking it and doing the dog are sexually suggestive. The repetition of the phrase "what'd I say" can also be interpreted as Charles asking his audience if they understand the sexual innuendos in the song.

It is worth noting that "What'd I Say Part I" was not initially intended to be a song. Instead, it was improvised during a live performance in 1958. When Charles ran out of songs to perform, he began playing the now-iconic chord progression and began improvising the lyrics on the spot. The crowd loved it, and he continued to play it at shows. When Charles was asked to record a new album, "What'd I Say Part I" was chosen as one of the songs to record. It became a massive hit, with Part II being released afterwards due to its popularity.

In 1958, Charles was on stage doing a live show when he ran out of stuff they'd prepared. There were 12 minutes of stage time remaining, and he rarely left the stage early. Charles told his band members, The Raelettes, "Listen, I'm going to fool around, and y'all just follow me." This 1959 hit single, What'd I Say, was the result of that impromptu on the spot jam session.
