IMAGINATION
Ray Drummond Billy Higgins Hank Jones Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Imagination is funny
It makes a cloudy day sunny
Makes a bee think of honey
Just as I think of you

Imagination is crazy
Your whole perspective gets hazy
Starts you asking a daisy
What to do, what to do?

Have you ever felt
A gentle touch and then a kiss
And then and then
Find it's only your imagination again? Oh, well

Imagination is silly
You go around willy-nilly

For example I go around wanting you
And yet I can't imagine that you want me too

Overall Meaning

The song "Imagination" by Ray Drummond Billy Higgins Hank Jones is a whimsical ode to the power of the human imagination. The lyrics describe how imagination has the power to transform the mundane into the magical, as well as distort reality and cause confusion. The first verse suggests that imagination has the power to make a cloudy day sunny and bring to mind sweet thoughts of love, as in the buzzing of a bee reminded of honey. The second verse takes on a more cynical tone, describing how imagination can distort our understanding of reality and leave us feeling disoriented and unsure of what to do.

The third verse is perhaps the most poignant, touching on the all-too-common experience of mistaking our imaginations for reality. The gentle touch and kiss we feel turns out to be mere figments of our imagination, leaving us disappointed and disillusioned. Yet the song ultimately trades in this harsh reality for the comforting, fantastical realm of imagination, with the final verse returning to the playful imagery of the first. Despite the doubts and insecurities expressed in the middle verses, the song ultimately celebrates the wonder and joy of allowing our imaginations to run wild.

Overall, "Imagination" is a lighthearted yet thought-provoking song that calls attention to the intricate workings of our minds and the powerful role imagination plays in shaping our experiences of the world.

Billy Higgins was such a wonderful drummer. He could play anything, at the highest level. He played in some of the most progressive bands, including with Ornette Coleman, played in blues/rock bands, was a Blue Note regular, and played brilliantly on Lee Morgan's astounding "Search for the New Land" album, one of my favorites. He was totally self-effacing behind the drums, just wanted the music to be as good as it could be. A great listener with great chops & deep musicality. It's silly to say that any of the world class musicians like these gentlemen are "better" or "greater" than other world-class musicians but Billy Higgins is the one I would have wanted to play with if I'd been a good enough musician forming a band. And he seems to have been a really lovely guy, always seemed full of joy when he was playing this great music.
